[GFSD Issue] yforth (license (fixed upstream)/word to avoid)

Projekt:Trisquel
Version:6.0
Komponente:License problems
Kategorie:Aufgabe
Priorität:minor
Zugewiesen:SirGrant
Status:closed
Beschreibung

The description line for the package yforth contains the word "freeware". I bet this is confusing to some people who might not know the difference between "freeware" and "free software". Perhaps the word could be replaced with "available at no cost" or something.

offending package

Also appears to need license review. In my opinion the license appears questionable. Would someone care to comment on this.

I have posted a helper method that removes the term freeware which is a word to avoid by GNU project guidelines. However I am asking for a license review from someone with more experience to verify that this package doesn't have a license problem. Thus I am switching the component license problem since the helper method will take care of the term "freeware" in the package description.

I have emailed debian legal for a consult about this.

I got this response from Debian legal. This package doesn't meet DFSG thus it clearly doesn't meet Trisquel's requirements. I have contacted the developer and even though he doesn't maintain the package anymore I asked him to consider re-licensing it under a free software license from the GNU project page.

If I don't get a satisfactory response I will contact the package maintainer and try to get it removed or moved to the non-free section so it doesn't show up in Trisquel.

Reported upstream:

Debian Bug #687348 (yforth has non-free copyright file (does not pass dfsg))

Edit: Good news! The developer said he would update the license and liberate it. Now, I will have to talk to the package maintainer and just get them to re-package it with the new license :)

Wow, nice work mate!

Thanks, if the language doesn't change in the new package I'll just write a quick package helper to change FreeWare --> FreeSoftware. That takes just a minute.

Changing the title and the priority to minor since the big issue was fixed upstream.

1) GPLv3 version is now in debian which is awesome because now all distros derived from debian that use their packages will benefit not just us.

2) Package description still contains the word to avoid freeware. I will re-write the package helper to simply change freeware --> free software because now it is true :).
