Cannot boot from CD.

Hello All.

I'm new to GNU/linux. I have been running Ubuntu on my old Dell Inspiron 1520.

I also just installed Trisquel (and am now waiting for a usb wifi card from thinkpenquin to test it out on the web.)

The case:

I'm trying to run a third disto that my wife is interested in, from disk (or install it as well, to run it on the computer.)

But I'm unable to boot the third distro from disk.

I pop in the distro disk, restart, hit F12, choose "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" . But instead of getting a welcome from the distro setup, I get the option to boot either Trisquel or Ubuntu. Interestingly at this point the background shows the Trisquel wallpaper.

Then if I don't choose a distro, after a few seconds Trisquel loads - as if I've chosen it.

Odd.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Hi there and welcome to freedom!

Maybe there's something wrong with that CD? Does it work on another machine?

Since you've last installed Trisquel, it has replaced the GRUB background with its. Also there is a hidden timeout as you've noticed and looks like Trisquel also makes itself the default option. So this is to be expected.

Sounds like the CD has a problem so that the computer boots from the hard drive instead.

Thanks! Its actually the second disk I've burned. So I'll try for third and see how it goes.

I didn't realize you were talking about a different distro. It would probably be better to ask on that distro's forum/mailing list/irc/whatever.

Will do.

One last thing: I have Ubuntu and Trisquel installed already.

Is there any problems associated with partitioning for and adding a third OS, generally?

Thanks,

Zem

If a distro installs an older version of the GNU GRUB bootloader or another bootloader altogether it might not detect your current distros. Restoring the bootloader could be tricky.

So, like always, make backups of things you don't want to lose. And then experiment to your heart's content.

Third distro install worked fine. Thanks for the help.
