Hi all, it has been a while since I have done a lan party.
Any recomendations? Any kind if game: shooter, strategy, arcade,...

Our Lan speed is really good but our broadband is pretty bad and we rather not use it.

Hi,

In this comment, I'll be suggesting only those games which are
available through the repositories for GNU+Linux-libre Trisquel
6.0 or 6.0.1 (Toutatis):

**- 0 A.D (real-time strategy):** Put civilizations of ancient
worlds against each other. It has some experimental features;
**- Armagetron Advanced (Tron or Zona0-like fighting game):**
Drive futuristic bikes and make others crash in your trails;
**- Battle for Wesnoth (turn-based strategy):** The single
player modes also deserve to be played. A lot of effort was put
on this game;
**- Freeciv (turn-based):** I haven't played it, but it looks
better than its parent, Civilization;
**- Frozen Bubble (match three):** I can't describe this game;
**- Hedgewars (turn-based shooter, like Worms);**
**- Liquid War:** The name says it all. I personally find this
game very hard;
**- MegaGlest (real-time strategy):** Put civilizations
(fictional or not) against each other;
**- Minetest:** I find this game even superior than Minecraft.
But I would suggest you to download the latest stable version
available through the Minetest project itself.
**- Nexuiz (futuristic first person shooter):** I have played it
some years ago. Xonotic is its successor;
**- OpenArena (futuristic first person shooter):** I have played
it some years ago;
**- OpenTTD:** In this game you have to create an organization
capable of using various means of transportation to deliver
food, wood, materials, and anything else you can imagine to
other places. I find it funny that I can't manage to put my
organization above the 0 mark on the cash flow, I do pay some of
my debts, but I always stay below 0... Sad. :D;
**- Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries (it looks like a real-
time strategy game):** I haven't played it yet;
**- SuperTuxKart (kart racing with gadgets and weapons):** I
have read somewhere that it's possible to play it with other
players over a network, perhaps I read it on its manual page
(man supertuxkart). Anyway, the game is still fun;
**- Teeworlds (third person shooter):** The characters are
really funny;
**- Warzone 2100 (futuristic real-time strategy);**
**- Widelands (real-time strategy):** This game uses a different
approach, it's not intended to be a battle game. Instead, its
focused on civilization growth, or how big your civilization can
be.

Besides the games available on the repositories, there are some
which aren't there, but are worth mentioning:

**- Minetest (again):** The latest version has lots of
improvements. Unfortunately, I'm unable to play it due to a
particular problem with either my video card (I hate Nvidia, but
ever since I was born, I never won a computer which uses only a
powerful Intel video card. Grrr...) or the libc6 package (for
more information, see this topic in the Minetest forum:
https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?pid=113697);
**- SuperTuxKart (again):** The latest version has lots of
improvements. I haven't played it;
**- Xonotic (futuristic first person shooter):** Successor of
Nexuiz, I wish the project stays alive and gets more popular
over the time.

Best regards, ADFENO.
Have a nice day.

Open Arena is a good game; ideal for a LAN party I think.

Nexuiz (as previously mentioned) is an absolute blast. Minstagib with low gravity, grappling hooks, and a large open map is intense.

Brutal DOOOM and FreeDOOM are an option that requires a little bit of setup, but it's worth it.

Minetest (also mentioned) is a lot of fun with the right mods.

BZFlag is a hoot. Don't let the graphic styling fool you, it's a lot of fun.

The Bub's Brothers is a browser based (networked) game that has a lot of old-school arcade style games in it.

I'd have to check the license on Warsow but it's another enjoyable FPS.

Unfortunately, Brutal Doom currently cannot be used in complete freedom, since ZDoom (the source port on which Zandronum is based) is infested with non-free stuff on a level that makes it more non-free than free. However, with time and dedication, there could be a liberated version created (we're missing such project yet).

Not a gamer but IMHO Steam is the best games platform. I wonder when they'll be joining us.

Very useful thread! Checking out openarena now.

I recommend OpenRA (based on Red Alert 1) Haven't played it for a while, but I got folks to install it at a LAN party and we had fun!
