Recommended video camcorder for free software

I am curious as to what you think is the best cheap camcorder for free software use. By this I mean no patent issues and full compatibility with free software, and by cheap I mean somewhere below $500; although it would be nice if you also listed high end free software friendly camcorders if you label them as such.
Do you have any recommendations for types of camcorders; film, analog tape, or digital? What resolutions would be supported?

These are the only free software friendly cameras I know of, definitely high-end though.
