Many non-free software

Description

Hi,

By analyzing the non-free packages, I found many software that are not entirely free in the sense of the FSF.
The list is large enough that I have time to do a bug report for each packages sorry.

I watched the software is to be modified in other distributions :

https://wiki.parabolagnulinux.org/Libre-packages
http://libreplanet.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines

And I looked when it was present in Trisquel :
http://packages.trisquel.info

Thunderbird, ffmpeg, audacious, abuse, p7zip, mplayer etc... it was released with the removal nonfree software recommendation, nonfree faac ?

Thank you for your work and sorry for the bug report grouped.

We should go through these one by one

Thunderbird
Description: Email client
Homepage: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird/
Problem: Recommends non-free software (extensions).
Recommended Fix: Change link to point to GNUzilla's list of free addons.
References: http://bugs.gnewsense.org/Bugs/00293
Copyright file:
(Source) package name(s): icedove, thunderbird

This fix has already been implemented. Our version of thunderbird links to the GNUzilla list of free addons so this is a non-issue.

ffmpeg
Description: Complete and free Internet live audio and video broadcasting solution for (GNU)Linux/Unix
Homepage: http://www.audiocoding.com/faac.html
Problem: nonfree faac
Recommended Fix: remove nonfree faac
References: https://wiki.parabolagnulinux.org/Libre-packages
Copyright file:
(Source) package name(s):

While I am not 100% sure on this I believe the issue here is the libfaac package which is not included in Trisquel. Again I believe this to be a non-issue but since I am not totally sure further input on this one would be useful.

Free Abuse Extensions
Description: Levels and graphics for Abuse.
Homepage: http://abuse.zoy.org/
Problem: The "Claudio" add-ons don't allow distribution and only non-commercial use.
Recommended Fix: Remove the Claudio add-ons.
References: https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?33450
Copyright file:
(Source) package name(s): abuse-frabs

This looks like a valid issue still. I downloaded the source code for abuse-frabs and in fact in the /addon/claudio/claudio.lsp file it does indeed say still

* NOTE: This and all other files by Claudio Bolzoni contained in the archive *
* claudio(1.5).zip can be used and modified freely for non-commercial purposes

We should remove the claudio add-on as recommended.

p7zip
Description:
Homepage:
Problem: RAR support?
Recommended Fix: ??
References:
Copyright file:
(Source) package name(s):

This is listed on the parabola page but as of right now the HTML link is down for me at least. I don't see the problem with having rar support in and of itself. In fact having RAR support was a FSF high priority project. The problem would stem from if the rar support comes from non-free software. I have not investigated this and it isn't on the LibrePlanet website. Would anyone care to investigate further?

mplayer
Description:
Homepage:
Problem: nonfree faac
Recommended Fix: remove nonfree faac
References: https://wiki.parabolagnulinux.org/Libre-packages
Copyright file:
(Source) package name(s):

I believe this has the same problem/resolution as ffmpeg in that it needs faac removed which I believe is already taken place so this one is a non-issue as far as I can see. If someone sees something I'm missing let us know.

Audacious plugins
Description: Plugins for the Audacious audio player.
Homepage: http://audacious-media-player.org/
Problem: Contains code released under the MAME license.
Recommended Fix: Remove the psf code. Use debian version 2.3+dfsg-1 or later.
References: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=594519
Copyright file:
(Source) package name(s): audacious-plugins

If you look at the package page Slaine and Dadga packages are unaffected (I looked at the src) because they are above version 2.4.x. You are right though the package in taranis is affected. It needs to have that psf code removed or the package removed or the package updated to a later version.

Final general comment. If you find a freedom issue please be more specific. For example just because a package is on that list of software that doesn't respect free distros and is in Trisquel doesn't mean it is a violation automatically. The fix may have been implemented which would mean it does in that case respect free system guidelines.

When you find a specific example please point it out (I believe I found at least two bugs going through the packages you mentioned) but being general about it takes a lot of time and effort. Thanks.

Marking as "wrong".

The original poster just looked at the list of software that does not respect free system guidelines and saw that some of the packages were in the repository. S/he did not attempt to ascertain if these packages had been modified to include the suggested fixes or not. If the OP finds a specific freedom bug they should raise it but being general like this just increases dev work and sends devs and volunteers on wild goose chases.
