Problem with Photosmart c3180

Hello everyone.
I am having a problem with a printer that I got second hand, it's a HP Photosmart C3180. When I try to use it in Debian or Trisquel LiveCD, it is not seen by the system. I tried with LInux Mint LiveCD and it works like a charm. I suspected it was a matter of proprietary drivers so I did some reading and I realized I had to install the free drivers hplip from the repositories. Which I did, and now I can use the scan function, but I can't still get the system to see it as a printer :S
Do you guys have any suggestion, is there any other free driver that needs to be installed? I would expect that with the free driver it might eventually not work as a scanner but work as a printer, but it's happening the other way around :S

Also, whenever I turn it on, it prints the "test page" on it's own. Why would that happen, could be related to the free drivers not working correctly?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, an update on the situation: looks like I'm an idiot -.-
I was doing the hp-setup without being su, so of course it wouldn't change the system settings :P
Everything seems to be working now.

The problem that remains is the test page, that seems to be a problem with a lot of HP printers (a quick search revealed dozens of people with the same problem). I shouldn't nitpick since it was given to me second hand, but still, it's a stupid thing HP make their stuff like this. I will have to try to solve this, or else I won't be keeping the printer. Lots of wasted ink and paper on test pages -.-

So, if anyone here can't seem to install a printer, don't forget to make su before :P

I don't seem to remember to have needed to use su in order to install a
printer in Trisquel.

I checked and there are several Photosmarts in h-node.com but not the
one you are using

Can you insert the printer into http://h-node.org ?

You think it's worth it?
If one goes to http://hplipopensource.com/ he can see all the details about which models and functions are supported by the free driver hplip.
Mine is included in this page http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/photosmart/photosmart_c3100_series.html

I still have the issue of the test page always keep printing. I will try to change the ink cartridges. But I am not very happy with HP. Lol, Epson is still the best when it comes to printers (I don't know how well Epson will work with free software...)

How does one add info to h-node?

According to Chris (ThinkPenguin's CEO), HP is the way to go: hplip is free software and most HP printers/scanners work great with Linux-libre (with no need of a firmware download).

I agree that HP printers are good for free software users, but if I can't solve the "test page" problem, they are no good :P
I will have to take a look at it later when I got the time (which means next year lol).

Click on the "add" link on this page: http://h-node.org/printers/catalogue/en

Even if it's not worth using that printer with free software, it's still a good idea to add it so others know that it doesn't work too well.
(Here's the list of printers that don't work at all with free software. http://h-node.org/printers/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/C-None/undef/undef/undef/undef )

I will as soon as I ca solve the "test page" problem. Until that happens, I can't really test the printer :P
But thanks ;)

Glad to see you got it working! Though one word of caution on HPLIP. I have had it suggest non-free firmware before. Taking for example this printer:

Make sure you don't agree to any evil EULA when using HPLIP. ;)
