Hi,

I've been meaning to post about this since 5.5 came out. Every USB key
I've created with the startup disk creator utility or via dd needs these
steps to boot:

1- Boot from USB, this will land to a "boot:" prompt
2- Type "help"
3- Press F2

I followed these instructions:
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb

Is there any way to make the 5.5 ISOs boot normally? Should I be
creating them with another utility?

Thanks for any advice on this.

Hello!

I have gotten bootable usb keys by using the 'dd' command, like this:

sudo dd if= of= bs=1M. Though these images
will boot normally, the installer may fail in the 'copying files'
phase. I get better results when using a utility called unetbootin.
This is available from ppa:gezakovacs. There may be freedom concerns
with this utility, but, since the included usb creator app is not an
option for me, I use it. The unetbootin process can be fully controlled
with command line options, thereby making it nice in scripts. I can
attach an example, if you like.

HTH,

Dave

Fabian,

is there a specific reason why you want to boot the ISO from USB ?
The simplest and most straight forward approach to get a USB stick booting up Trisquel 5.5 is simply to install it. You can treat the USB stick similar to a small HDD. I run Trisquel 5.5 from a quality 16GB stick myself without issues. I simply would do a custom layout and disable swap completely. There are a few other tricks when running Linux from any flash-based media but most of them are not mandatory anymore.
