Over the past year or so Keurig has been getting a lot of criticism from the world at large for its use of digital restrictions of a sort on its Keurig 2.0 coffee maker. You may have learned about this issue from the Free Software Foundation.

In any event a number of weeks ago the FSF sent out some emails about how Keurig was back peddling due to the pressure from its customers. Unfortunately it turned out that the company had no plans to actually resolve the DRM problem. Rather it was a public relations stunt to relieve the criticisms- but have no actual impact as far as the DRM was concerned. What the company actually said was more along the lines of "we'll get more coffee companies to license our DRM".

I had already had enough of this and wanted to do something about it. I personally don't even drink coffee either. In any event I had this great idea on how we can educate people on the problems of digital restrictions and non-free software in general. As this particular issue is in regards to a coffee maker I thought lets make a coffee mug that promote DRM-free coffee (presumably coffee that isn't made with a DRM coffee maker) and use that as a means to drum up conversations on digital restrictions.

It's kinda difficult even when your the biggest advocate out there to bring up the topic with non-technical people. However with a mug that screams "danger" all over it people are bound to ask the question. The coffee mug literally reads" DRM-free Coffee". It sounds to the non-technical individual as though there is something dangerous in some brands of coffee. This should (and has already for me) led to multiple conversations on DRM with people I'd never normally speak to about technical things. It's a great conversation starter.

Now that I've said that the big cost in these for us is shipping-related due to the weight and shape. If your going to an event we're attending like PorcFest (we'll be there in two weeks, in New Hampshire, USA) or South East [GNU]Linux Fest (this coming week in Charlotte, NC, USA) wait on this. You'll probably be able to get one from us then.

I think this is a great idea. These days we run into DRM everywhere, (in computers and phones obviously,) in printers, tractors, cars, garage doors, you name it. For people to be able to say no to DRM they first have to learn about how it confines them. Good initiative Chris.
