Have you looked to see if canon has a driver? My Dad has a Canon--different model, but wifi. Downloaded the driver and followed the instructions from Canon took 15 minutes (after 4 hours of fruitless effort before that!).

Is the driver free software? Looking for "canon printer" in the "Synatpic package manager" (in the "System settings"), the first two packages that are listed (especially the first one in fact) may bring a free software solution... if it exists: "printer-driver-cjet" and "cups-backend-bjnp".

That is a good point! I am not sure. He is no longer using Trisquel so it is not relevant for him anymore but you should make sure.

If you install the "gdebi" package (in Trisquel's repository), then you can install a .deb package by double-clicking on it. Is the package you found free software?

Apparently Canon has at least one driver that is freedom respecting:

https://www.usa.canon.com/nw3s/CanonUSA/DownloadContents/English/0100344001EN.htm

I'm not sure if they have one for your printer, but it is encouraging!

It does not look like the user has freedom 3:
You may modify the Software only for your own use

You can use the GPL and do that?

"This Canon's printer driver for Linux provided to you together with this Agreement

("Product") of Canon Inc. ("Canon") contains the free software components as listed

in Schedule 2 of Appendix in the Readme file, and which are licensed under GNU General

Public License version 2 published by the Free Software Foundation ("GPL")."

I guess what I'm saying is: Should we alert the FSF?

Maybe some parts are under the GPL and some not?

The FSF doesn't have a stake of copyright in Linux, so contacting them about this would be pointless (they have nothing to do with it).

I'd wager to guess it isn't a license violation, though. The driver is probably distributed alongside some other software (like firmware) needed for the hardware to actually work. Hard to say without looking thoroughly into it, though.

What do you mean by "stake of copyright". I'm not a lawyer and I'm relatively new to these issues--although I like to learn about them.

My understanding is that the GPL confers the four freedoms and the FSF encourages license holders to give the license to the FSF so that the FSF can bear any expense in upholding the license against violators.

When you mention 'linux' I assume you are referring to the kernel?

Maybe someone who actually understands this (a.k.a. not me :) can figure out the state of the Canon driver(s)? If they are free wouldn't it make sense to include them in Trisquel?

The GNU GPL is a copyright license. Violations of it are copyright infringement. It is only the copyright holder of a work who can take legal action against copyright infringement.

The FSF does not hold any copyright to Linux, as it has never contributed code to Linux.

Of course, when I say "Linux", I mean Linux, the kernel.

> If they are free wouldn't it make sense to include them in Trisquel?

If they were libre, the would be a part of mainline Linux and distributed in Debian's main repository, which would flow down into trisquel's repository. The fact that it isn't suggests that something in it is proprietary. However, that doesn't necessarily mean a license violation; it could be that the proprietary components are completely isolated from Linux and act separately.

Thank you, that was clear. Sometimes I forget that Trisquel is Debian/Ubuntu without all the non-free stuff. The point I was making about the FSF defending a copyright, is that they defend THEIR copyright which was signed over to them by the original copyright holder. This is often done as the FSF is in a better position to ensure legal action is taken when necessary. The original holder had nothing to lose by signing it over since their only concern is keeping the work free-as-in-freedom, and the FSF is in a better position to do that.

Does your printer have a little screen with settings? Have you changed any of these settings directly on the printer? Is there WPS?

Is it Canon or HP?

I'm having trouble downloading a manual without using javascript. Do you have a manual for the printer?

You say earlier in this post that it worked with USB. Maybe if you reverse your steps and uninstall what you installed, you can use the printer with USB again. Then just use it with USB until you can figure out a clear way to use WiFi.

Unless, you are still able to return the printer and buy one that is known to work with Trisquel (assuming there is a WiFi printer known to work with Trisquel)

@ pragmatist
It's Canon.
I should have a manual (.pdf) somewhere.
Now the printer re-work, via USB.
