Slim Login Manager Problem with dzen2 and xmobar

I startup xmobar or dzen2 in ~/.xsession, but they are not visible on the screen.
This only occurs when logging in with slim, if i start x from a terminal then xmobar, dzen2 are both visible. In order to start xmobar or dzen2 i need to manually from the terminal.
All my other applications appears to display their windows just fine.
Anyone know how to fix this / what the problem is?
