Bootup Hangs on 5.0

Hi: I just updated to 5.0, and now when I turn on the computer, the machine boots to a blank black screen, and hangs. There is no disk or other discernible
activity. This machine is a test machine with replaceable drives, and I don't have this problem with for example Debian Squeeze. The machine is a Dell GX260, 2.4 GHz/40GB/1GB/nVidia 6200.

Intriguingly, if I press the power button to shut off the machine, it then proceeds to complete the boot process normally. Is this a GRUB problem or ???

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

The more I fiddle with this, the more I'm convinced that it's hardware. The system is now booting after a short hesitation, but I cannot boot a Puppy Linux CD to edit GRUB and gain root access (kernel panic). It seems to be either the DVD or the PATA port/chip. More experimentation to be done.

Thanks; I'll report back. Sorry for the diversion.
