I have an old Thinkpad T21 that I want to get more use out of but it's so darn slow with Trisquel 7 Mini.

Would you suggest a good Libre Distro and/orDesktop environment for this laptop?

I would install ConnochaetOS 14.2: https://connochaetos.org

128 Mb of RAM is considered a minimum and 256 MB are recommended: https://connochaetos.org/wiki/docs/requirements

If you can find two modules of SDRAM - non-ECC @100 GHz...

Wow. Interesting. How does one install it though? I'm used to ISOs ... Ive never done anything other than an ISO install.

"100 GHz..." lol.

Very interesting that GNU-Linux distro!! maybe this one is more suitable for my netbook with 32bits atom n270 than Devuan. (Devuan is too outdated).

Does ConnochaetOS have ShitstemD?

ConnochaetOS uses the technically inferior sysvinit.

In my experience, the "fastest" Libre GNU/Linux distributions were (in this order) GuixSD, dragora, Parabola OpenRC.

Openbox, twm, i3, windowmaker, are all great window managers that should keep your ram usage really low.

It is not necessary install these window managers, SliTaz(LXDE) + Linux-Libre 50 MB on ram and 2% CPU normal usage on a i486.

Haha, I think it would be fun to have a good reason to try to use Guix SD actually...

You can go with Trisquel NetInstall too: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/using-netinstall-image-bootable-usb-drive

After installing the console environment (nothing more) that way, you need to know the light programs you want (the window manager, the Web browser, etc.) and install them with 'sudo apt install'.

In my experience, there is no such thing as the fastest distribution, rather a minimal net install of any gnuxino with as few crap installed as possible, a decent DE or window manager..
It's all gahnuu and it's all fast but you need to set it right. Using lightweight software is really what makes all the difference in the world..

You make a good point. I think for now, im going to just remove LXDE and use Blackbox while keeping the Trisquel Mini install. Alternately, I may just keep it as a CLI only laptop. Maybe it will get me to improve my meager bash skills.

Though maybe a bit outdated, there is also Librepup based on trisquel7 packages and linux-libre. With that you can wake up any old computer.

iso here https://archive.org/details/librepup-6.0.2.0

librepup.info is now a dead link
