What do you think of GNU Guix?

I try it out on a spare machine occasionally to see how it's coming along. I think it has a lot of potential, but it has a ways to go. I like the concept of the package manager, but it's really slow. It can take hours to update your system or sometimes just to install a package. They also need a graphical front end (Emacs doesn't count) for the package manager and a real installer that doesn't require the user to be familiar with Scheme, but that can come later. I understand that the package manager is their focus for now.

chaosmonk - have you ever gotten the guix package manager installed on Trisquel? I've tried in the past, but have not succeeded. I would like to use it for an occasional package if I could get it installed. I'm not looking for a how-to, but just wondering if you've ever tried and succeeded.

Yes, I've gotten it running on Trisquel 7 and 8. I used to use it for a handful of packages, but now I just build those from source. Here are the instructions I used: https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/manual/en/html_node/Binary-Installation.html

Thanks - this looks far easier than I tried with far fewer dependencies. OK I'll give it another shot.
