There are meta packages in Debian's main repository and the installation is quite easy.

Now I'm testing Parabola. Should I follow the instructions on Arch's wiki? I have "your-freedom" in place so it should be able to keep non-free software out of my system.

Arch-based systems have "groups", which are not exactly the same as but
similar to metapackages. IIRC, there is a "gnome" group which is
similar to Debian's "gnome-core" metapackage, and a gnome-extras" group
which in combination with the "gnome" group is similar to Debian's
"gnome" package.

Thanks for reply. However when I asked several mirror server administrators, they showed no interest in supporting free/libre distributions. Without a local mirror server it will be very difficult to update my system.

Is this an issue of censorship, limited bandwidth, or both?

When I installed parabola I followed these instructions.
I never managed to get the automatic installer working. But I am pretty sure after my system was set up I simply gave "mate" to pacman and I had the mate desktop.

I seem to remember some difficulty with lightdm but I can't remember what it was...

Edit: That link is good but here's the one that tells you how to install MATE. It's the follow up post to the other link.
