Wow, I didn't know I2P had their own browser now, too.

Sorry, this is a wontfix. Since it's a downloader instead of a proper
package, quidam does not want to include it in Trisquel at all.

I think I can fix the compton thing, but I don't have the energy to do
it right now. Remind me if I don't get back to you in the next few
days.

Flashed the ISO using the terminal method described in the documentation. When trying to boot into the "Try Trisquel without installing" option, I am presented with a blank screen and blinking underscore. Flashed the ISO twice to check whether this was an issue the first time around, but the issue persists.

I suspect this might have something to do with section 3 here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/162075/my-computer-boots-to-a-black-screen-what-options-do-i-have-to-fix-it/162076#162076

The laptop is MacBook 2,1, so this has nothing to do with the nonexistent UEFI.

Ready to investigate with further guidance!

I decided to give the new Trisquel 9 graphical live system a spin, and found that the orca screen reader will not start. First, I tried waiting about 10 minutes after boot, thinking it might start in the manner to which I'm accustomed in Trisquel. When nothing seemed to happen, I ticked the volume controls on my keyboard, and heard the 'opop' sounds, thereby confirming that the audio system is working. I typed the orca command "/usr/bin/orca --setup" into the 'run' dialogue, and heard nothing. Next, I tested the tts system, and found that it's working. Finally, I opened a mate terminal and gave the command, "which orca", and got "/usr/bin/orca", which showed that the binary is in the proper place. I used the ocr feature in my smart phone to learn this. Finally, I ran orca from the terminal and heard errors regarding something called canbera being missing, and something about unable to start gtk dialog without a parent. Again, using my phone's ocr features and tts. BTW, this activity was all on bare metal.

Thanks,

-Dave H.

Hi again, there is already a couple of changes meant to fix this issue, hopefully the next ISO will have this issue fixed.

Cheers!

Will it be possible to migrate from Trisquel 8 to Trisquel 9? Without wiping disk and loosing existing data.

I am also waiting for the news about Trisquel Mini 9 32bit. I had issues with Trisquel Mini 8 with installing several languages for keyboard. i did not find way to make keyboard type in many languages.

Thank you.

Yes. In fact, if you are not afraid of alpha versions, you can already do that:
$ sudo sed -i 's/flidas/etiona/' /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

hello,
I upgrade Trisquel Mini 8 to 9 changing the sources.list from flidas to etiona and all went well

Thanks all! I successfully upgraded.

Unfortunately riseup-vpn again does not install with the same mistake when installing from debian package as it did in trisquel 8: can't locate riseup-vpn.

Mini 9 i386 works very fine. Wine, all mate environment utilities as in standard, icecat, tor browser, SQLite and libreoffice work very well, with as little as 2GB RAM.

Thank developers for great job! Please never discontinue Mini and i386.

Please help. I tried to install trisquel 9 64bit on another machine the same way as I installed Mini with repositories given here https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-9-mini-my-install-and-some-doubt#comment-146000

And it did not work.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gnupg : Breaks: python-apt (<= 1.1.0~beta4) but 1.1.0~beta1ubuntu0.16.04.8+8.0trisquel4 is to be installed

When trying to install python-apt:

Recommends: fonts-liberation2 but it is not going to be installed or
ttf-mscorefonts-installer but it is not installable
Recommends: python3-uno (>= 4.4.0~beta2) but it is not going to be installed
ure : Breaks: libreoffice-core (< 1:5.3.0~beta1~) but 1:5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial10 is to be installed

Circle... When sudo apt install -f it gives nothing:

And upgrade demands python-apt again.

As for riseup-vpn the content of leap.list is

I also tried

deb http://deb.leap.se/client release bionic

Try running

This is correct. Did you run `sudo apt update` after editing `leap.list` before trying to install the package?

Yes, I always use sudo apt update and it never gave any error, it says:

Hit:1 http://deb.leap.se/client release InRelease
(and other hits)

But as far as I try to install riseup:

sudo apt install riseup-vpn leap-archive-keyring

it says
E: Unable to locate package riseup-vpn

Okay, I was wrong. The [bionic repository][1] only includes packages
for bitmask-vpn, not riseup-vpn. The [buster repository][2] does
include riseup-vpn, so that's what you need. Note however, that there
is only a 64-bit binary package for riseup-vpn. There is [no 32-bit
package][3], so if you have a 32-bit system you're out of luck, unless
you compile the program yourself.

I updgraded to trisquel 9 with Software Updater program. It upgraded but as I logged again I got some problems.

My beautiful custom theme went away. Trisquel button for main menu changed. And there is no more keyboard language change that I installed long ago. Appearence does not open with error that mate-settings-daemon is not running, text of the error:

Unable to start the settings manager 'mate-settings-daemon'.
Without the MATE settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with DBus, or a non-MATE (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the MATE settings manager.

while when trying to run it from terminal:

$ mate-settings-daemon

I successfully installed riseup-vpn on 64bit since you change Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04 thanks a lot. But it does not run. If running from terminal:

$ riseup-vpn
riseup-vpn: symbol lookup error: riseup-vpn: undefined symbol: gtk_shortcuts_window_get_type

I also noted all repos of etonia disapeared from Software Updates and I can't add them. Also all authentication keys disapeared or I can't see them (desktop is not fully running: white text on white background many times, no ability to differentiate flag on and flag off).

I see a few problems:

* All of the repositories are commented out. You need to remove the `# ` from the repositories you want to use, or they will be ignored.

* `deb-src` lines are for downloading source packages. In order to be able to download and install binary packages, you need to change `deb-src` to `deb`. If you want to be to download both binaries *and* sources, then duplicate the lines and in the copied lines change `deb-src` to `deb`.

* In the torproject line, you should probably change `xenial` to `bionic`, since Trisquel 9 is based on Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.

Ok. I put with echo into sources list all repos back and it showed some possible upgrade again. I started upgrade in hope to upgrade the mate desktop so that it fully apply. And after a night of upgrade it stuck and I had to press the switch button. Now when I try to boot the comp trisquel 9 demands login and password and after I use my home directory as login and root password I get into command line in which I attempt to proceed upgrade and now it upgraded fully. But I do not know how to get away of command line and open my desktop again. I am now in tty1 command line in that comp, it awaits commands, and I wish get into my desktop environment.

Your hostname is sensitive information? Perhaps you should have chosen
a better hostname. It is usually broadcasted on whatever network you
are connected to. Hostnames are intended to be known and seen by others.

Any update on what roadblocks are still preventing the release of Etiona? The Ubuntu base on Belenos has already hit EOL, and the base of Flidas is due to EOL next year. It's pretty crucial to get a stable Etiona release shipped well before that happens, to give users time to transition.

Hello

Recently, I installed Trisquel 9.0 on my second x200. Everything works out-of-the-box.

But I have some remarks:
- abrowser is asking to update to version 74, but this is not done due to libnss3 (>= 2:3.47) but 2:3.35-2ubuntu2.7 should be installed, this isn't a great deal, but it is annoying to see 1 update everytime when I run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
- I also use nextcloud, but it isn't available. I assume it is because of this package qt5-webengine, is there a possibility to create a nextcloud-client version without qt5-webengine? (like Parabola did)[1]
- also 3 missing plugin packages: webext-https-everywhere, webext-noscript, webext-ublock-origin. Are those going to be added? If not they can be added via abrowser extension tab.

I also tried mini.iso, but that one didn't worked, when choosing the desktop environment, it keeps failing, without debug info.

Hello,

Thank you Connochaetes for your reminder.

I downloaded and made a live USB from new testing Trisquel 9. Checked by md5 checksum.
Now, I'm writting this from live testing session.
Again spanish language is preinstalled but is not true. I had to deselect and select again to load the spanish language. Then I changed the keyboard layout and is working ok.
Mate 1.20 looks cool !
Played default games: ok
I Opened many programs at same time: ok
I Opened many webpages in abrowser : ok

To be continued..

I just tried an install of 32-bit Etiona with the default Mate desktop, on Bishop, my decade old Acer Aspire One. Both the live session and the graphical failed, so I went for the test install, forgetting that this would install Flidas. Which it did. If anyone can remind me how to swap out the Flidas software sources for the Etiona ones, so I can try an upgrade, I would appreciate it.

I ran the full-upgrade to Etiona from Flidas (keeping in mind this was a fresh install of Flidas). So far, it seems to be working fine. A few bits of feedback:

Things I like:

* Still loving the lightweight Mate desktop. It flies on Bishop (a decade old netbook with after-market SSD and 2GB RAM), yet still offers a reasonably full-featured UX.

* language support seems to be fully installed by default, instead of asking me to add extra packages the first time I go into the Languages applet in the Control Panel. Same for Personal File Sharing.

* the installer still finds my monitor and set it up flawlessly (as far I know ;) with no post-install tweaking required.

* I can still ctrl-alt left and right to switch between workspaces, yay!

* dragging (most) windows to the right or left of the screen still automatically docks them to that half of the screen. Yay!

* Abrowser hasn't crashed on me yet, although I have yet to seriously stress test it.

Things that could be improved on:

* I can't see any kind of 'system information' in the Control Panel, or anywhere under system. Where do I find a list of my hardware (eg RAM detected, 32-bit vs. 64-bit etc)?

* in Add/Remove programs, using the scroll buttons goes ridiculously slow, but using the mouse to push the scroll bars up and down goes ridiculously fast. Going up and down with the arrow buttons works more smoothly.

* I can't find Jami in Add/Remove programs, not under that name, or under the old "Ring" name. I can't find SyncThing there either. Both are available using sudo apt install from a terminal.

* I see both Eye of Mate and Viewnior under graphics, even though they both seem to do the same task. Isn't it redundant to have both?

* I see there's no obvious passphrase manager. So users may still see the built-in password manager in Abrowser as being implicitly endorsed for storing website passwords. I already opened a thread to discuss this.

* Transmission still doesn't dock to half the screen when I drag it against the left or right hand side.

* The Sync feature in ABrowser still uses the Firefox branding. Does this even work? Does it use Mozilla's servers? Is this something we're comfortable with implicitly endorsing?

* Goggle appears to be the default search engine in ABrowser. Wouldn't it be better to use something like DuckDuckGo or Ecosia or a Searx instance or something?

* Would it be viable to run a Searx instance at search.trisquel.info to be the default search option in Abrowser? Or search.fsf.org, then it could be the default search in IceCat too.

* I'm not convinced Pidgin is the best choice for default chat app. It's never recommended as an XMPP or IRC client by regular users of those networks. I don't think anyone who isn't a retro IM geek is still using any of the legacy nonfree networks it provides connections to.

Menu Suggestions:

* I've often though it would be useful to have 'About Trisquel' under 'System', giving the Trisquel version and a link to a page with more information about that version. The 'About Mate' pop-up could be triggered from a button on the 'About Trisquel' page.

* The number of LibreOffice entries in the "Office" category in the start menu is overwhelming. Wouldn't it be better to have a single entry under "Office" for LibreOffice, which opens up a submenu containing its various tools?

* The "Accessories" category in the start menu has a confusing number of items. It seems a bit unclear why some things are launched from there, some from "Other", and some from System.

* Some of the items in "Accessories" arguably belong in "Office" (eg Plume, Atril, the calculator), in which there would be more room if you followed the suggestion above about LibreOffice.

* I suggest reserving "Accessories" for things like Terminal, Caja, Engrampa, System Monitor, and Screenshot, that users use to carry out tasks, rather than to tweak the system. The rest probably belong somewhere under System (eg Character Map, Onboard, Passwords and Keys).

* I would suggest replacing "Other" with a menu for "Accessibility", which can hold the Screen Magnifier, Orca screen reader, etc.

That's more than enough for now. I'd do some more playing around tomorrow.

> I can't see any kind of 'system information' in the Control Panel, or anywhere under system. Where do I find a list of my hardware (eg RAM detected, 32-bit vs. 64-bit etc)?

It's in the "MATE System Monitor" under the "System" tab.

> in Add/Remove programs, using the scroll buttons goes ridiculously slow, but using the mouse to push the scroll bars up and down goes ridiculously fast. Going up and down with the arrow buttons works more smoothly.

Is the behavior different in Flidas?

> I can't find Jami in Add/Remove programs, not under that name, or under the old "Ring" name. I can't find SyncThing there either. Both are available using sudo apt install from a terminal.

This should be fixed before release. The problem is that Add/Remove Applications currently gets its application data from Ubuntu's [app-install-data][1] package (with non-free applications removed), which not only is missing Trisquel-specific packages like Abrowser, but also hasn't been updated since Ubuntu 15.10, so by now the application data does not very accurately reflect what is actually available in Trisquel's repositories. I've been working on a [script][2] to generate our own application data to use instead. It's apparently not in the repo yet, but the script is working.

> Transmission still doesn't dock to half the screen when I drag it against the left or right hand side.

Try adjusting the width of the window manually and see how small it can go. It's possible that Transmission's minimum width is greater than half your screen width, in which case docking wont work.

> The Sync feature in ABrowser still uses the Firefox branding. Does this even work? Does it use Mozilla's servers? Is this something we're comfortable with implicitly endorsing?

Yes, it works and it uses Mozilla's servers. I'm personally not comfortable with it, but quidam is and it's his decision.

> Goggle appears to be the default search engine in ABrowser. Wouldn't it be better to use something like DuckDuckGo or Ecosia or a Searx instance or something?

This is probably a mistake. The default is supposed to be be DuckDuckGo.

> Would it be viable to run a Searx instance at search.trisquel.info to be the default search option in Abrowser? Or search.fsf.org, then it could be the default search in IceCat too.

I proposed this as an alternative to DuckDuckGo, but quidam had concerns about legal liability.

These are things quidam would have to decide to change, and he doesn't regularly check the forum. If you want them to be addressed, the best way would be to propose them at tomorrow's meeting. Meetings begin at 16:00 UTC, which I know doesn't work for your timezone, but the discussion typically stretches through the day until around 22:00ish UTC.

Chaosmonk:

So it is. I never would have thought to look there. Would it be possible to add a menu item in a more obvious place that opens the System Monitor to that tab (and maybe a similar item in Control Panel)? Maybe under hardware? Could also be something like the 'About Trisquel' menu item I suggested.

> Is the behavior different in Flidas?

Yes, otherwise I would not have noticed it, and therefore not commented on it :)

> This should be fixed before release.

Awesome, great work.

I suggested in a forum thread a few years ago that the graphical Add/Remove Programs tool needed to only offer a select list of end user apps, which are a) graphical, and b) as user-friendly as the Add/Remove Programs tool itself. If you are writing a custom script for selecting its content, then that would be easier to do.

As mentioned in that older thread, I still think that CLI programs ought to be installable only from a terminal. Would it be possible to write a script that limits the list of programs in Synaptic to those who a GUI?

> It's possible that Transmission's minimum width is greater than half your screen width, in which case docking wont work.

Yes, that's probably the problem. But the Transmission window doesn't *need* to be wider than half my netbook screen (thanks to its minimal UI). How much work would it be to tweak Transmission to allow its window to be smaller (maybe such a fix could be contributed upstream)?

> Yes, it works and it uses Mozilla's servers.

Is the software Mozilla uses for this libre? Is there an options in the Sync tool in Abrowser to use a self-hosted server instead of Mozilla's? If so, then I guess this is OK.

> I proposed this as an alternative to DuckDuckGo, but quidam had concerns about legal liability.

Why? Searx is just metasearch. It doesn't store anything locally AFAIK. What about making a community-hosted Searx instance the default search engine? Like search.disroot.org or https://searx.neocities.org/

> These are things quidam would have to decide to change, and he doesn't regularly check the forum.

Fair enough, but I presume that those of you who do will pass along ideas you see on the forum, when you think they have legs.

That's 4-10am my time, literally my sleeping hours ;) Any chance of starting every second meeting a few hours earlier, or later?

> Would it be possible to add a menu item in a more obvious place that opens the System Monitor to that tab (and maybe a similar item in Control Panel)?

A .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/ resembling this

```
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=About Trisquel
Comment=Trisquel System Information
Exec=mate-system-monitor --show-system-tab
Icon=start-here
Type=Application
Categories=Settings;HardwareSettings;
OnlyShowIn=MATE;
```

would create a menu entry like the one you describe. However, we'd then need to translate the "Name=" and "Comment=" fields into every language supported by Trisquel.

> > Is the behavior different in Flidas?

Do you mind double checking if you haven't already? I'm looking at a Flidas system right now and the scrolling behavior seems to be what you are describing. I definitely did not intentionally change the scrolling speed. I made many other changes, the largest being Gtk2 -> Gtk3 migration, and it is possible that this could have affected the scrolling speed as a side effect.

> As mentioned in that older thread, I still think that CLI programs ought to be installable only from a terminal. Would it be possible to write a script that limits the list of programs in Synaptic to those who a GUI?

Yes, that would be very easy to do. I would just need to add a line to the current script to filter out programs whose .desktop files contain "Terminal=True". I was already considering doing this, and probably will now.

The [server-side code][1] is free, so self-hosting should be possible in theory. I'm not sure how easy it is to actually configure the browser to use one's self-hosted server. IIRC, the view quidam expressed when we discussed this is that since the data is encrypted it is not an issue that it is stored on Mozilla's servers.

What is the resolution of your netbook?

I forgot to mention, I really like the fact that the Sound applet is now available from 'Sound and Video' in the start menu. Along similar lines, it would be great to have other frequently tweaked config applets available in the relevant menus. For example, perhaps the 'Network Connections' applet could be in 'Internet', and the Display or Screensaver applets in 'Graphics'.

I did. Flidas doesn't scroll like that on Add/Remove Programs on my system. That said, I do tend to do a lot of tweaking after an install to get my touchpad working how I like it, so the scrolling behaviour of my system may not reflect a fresh Flidas install.

Awesome!

For me, this is a freedom issue. In the same way not being able to replace Abrowser as the default web browser in Trisquel would be a freedom issue. Not in the shallower sense of licensing and such, but in the deeper sense that what we value (as I understand it) is the user's freedom to choose what software to use with their system, or not, at all times. In the same way, do we not value the user's freedom to choose what software their system can connect with over a network, or not, at all times?

Again, as long as it's possible to choose a different Sync server in the Abrowser GUI, for me that's sufficient to address the network freedom issue. Ideally, I'd like to see the Mozilla Sync client in Abrowser replaced with a P2P system that uses a SyncThing as the back-end. But I realize this would be a major development project in itself.

I think UI tweaks are probably going to have to wait until Trisquel 10, but I don't think this should be too hard. If I understand correctly, these menu entries already exist, and you just want them to appear in an additional location. Is that right? That's easier than create a new menu entry from scratch because we don't need to worry about translations.

Speaking of the menu, for Trisquel 10 I am going to push for making [Brisk Menu][1] the new default. I wanted to do this for Trisquel 9, but until recently Brisk had a bug whereby it could not be fully navigated with the keyboard, making certain UI elements inaccessible to users who can't use a mouse. That bug was fixed recently, too late to make the change for Trisquel 9, but making it an option for Trisquel 10. I think it's a much better menu.

According to [this page][2], once you have a sync server running you can start using it by editing the "identity.sync.tokenserver.uri" item in about:config.

Yes, something like this is out of scope for Trisquel.

I suggest posting an issue [here][3] to see if upstream is open to such a change.

Let's say a member of this community set up a Sync server and invited us all to use it. It would be better if a beginner, using Trisquel for the first time, could switch their Abrowser to using this community-hosted server by making a simple change in the GUI, either in Sync UI itself or somewhere in the Abrowser settings.

Boba:
> I personally value the freedom to choose what the software I use does, for instance the freedom to turn off any Sync-like functions in my browser. Abrowser already ships with that freedom, so I'm fine with it.

By this logic, the Amazon lens spyware shipped in Ubuntu was not a problem, because Ubuntu shipped with the freedom to turn it off or remove it. This was Ubuntu apologists' excuse at the time, and seems like a pretty shallow understanding of software freedom to me. YMMV.

It should be possible to add an item to about:preferences which provides a more beginner-friendly way to modify `identity.sync.tokenserver.uri`. However, translating the new menu item into every supported language would be non-trivial for us. Perhaps it would be worth a try for you to propose this feature to Mozilla.

Here is the source code (under the MPLv2, a free software license) of Firefox Sync: https://github.com/mozilla-services/syncserver

Here are detailed information to install it, configure it and run it: https://mozilla-services.readthedocs.io/en/latest/howtos/run-sync-1.5.html

If I remember well what I read, the server cannot read the data it stores.

I just upgraded it to Etiona. Several functions/applications do not work (back up, appearance, network ploxy, etc). I have sometimes got some kind of notification that something called KVM conflicts with MATE, while upgrading too. Those are not serious problems for me, though.

EDIT:
I got this error message when I tried to open setting>hardware>mouse:

MATE設定マネージャー('mate-settings-daemon')を起動することができません。
設定マネージャーが起動できない場合、いくつかの設定が反映されません。これはDBusの問題、あるいはMATEでない(KDEなどの)別の設定マネージャーがすでに起動されていてMATE設定マネージャを衝突していることが原因かもしれません。

and when I tried to activate screenshot:

スクリーンショットプログラムのUI定義ファイルを読込中にエラーが発生しました:
/usr/share/mate-screenshot/mate-screenshot.ui: required
gtk+ version 3.10, current version is 2.24

mate-utilsがインストールされているか確認してください。

I installed mate-utils and it solved. While doing that, I did sudo apt upgrade and got this error message:

以下のパッケージには満たせない依存関係があります:
python3-aptdaemon.pkcompat : 競合: packagekit
競合: packagekit:i386
FYI.
BTW, I noticed Linux's converting function hiragana to kanji works great, or rather, normal. Windows' and iOS's are really stupid so I got used to convert one word by one word but this time, I tried to convert them as a full sentence and it did not make a even single mistake.

EDIT2:
I got another unfamiliar message:

「アップデートすべてをインストールできる」状態ではありません
Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.

This can be caused by:
*A previous upgrade which didn't complete
*Problems with some of the installed software
*Unofficial software packages not provided by Trisquel
*Normal changes of a pre-release version of Trisquel

And I clicked "upgrade partially" button on the popup then that something program of upgrade or update disappeared from desktop.

The above trouble might have been solved. Upgrade seems to be done. Those programs work now. Mullvad also seems to work. But it seems that all internet traffic is cut except of Tor Browser. Apt update, Abrowser, Icedove, Jami, etc do not get internet connection, neither with proxy nor direct (VPN). The internet speed is strangely fast.

Am I the only person who has this internet trouble on Trisquel 9? Mullvad seems to concern with this trouble so I sent them a log but since Icedove does not connect to the internet, I would not be able to read the reply, I think, though.
