I am surprised no one has heard of it, but here is the website,

https://www.nitrokey.com/

the reason i say no one must have heard of it, is because no one has posted this anywhere in the forums. ;)

Could we get a version of the nitrokey storage/pro app into the trisquel repository?

It is apparently open source/free software. I know how some of you feel about "open source" but it is used in the gpl3 license
so i would think you would be jumping to find about this,

They have 8GB-64GB encrypted flash drives being sold on a campaign in indiegogo website.

Can someone check to see if this is a legit thing? I am very curious myself.

I am certian privacy advocates will love this if it is genuine.

Long story short though, you can buy hidden encrypted flash drives there (nitrokey storage)
and more...

In what way is this superior to simply using full disk encryption?

its a way of having another option to store your files. for starters anyways... I will tell you more later...

If you use a program with a vulnerability that is exploited, then the attacker may be able to read your files in your home folder (no need for root permissions) including your private GPG key. With that key, the attacker can then usurp your identity (e.g., sign emails) and decrypt encrypted messages that were addressed to you.

Disk encryption is useful when the disk is stolen. Not when a vulnerability in a running program is exploited.

You didn't finish the sentence: the attacker can then usurp your identity (e.g., sign emails) and decrypt encrypted messages that were addressed to you **if he also manages to crack the password associated with your private key**.
That is exactly the reason why long and complex pass-phrases are mandatory.

My post was not clear (possible confusion between "Nitrokey" and "GPG private key"):

If you use a program with a vulnerability that is exploited, then the attacker may be able to read your files in your home folder (no need for root permissions) including your private GPG key. With that *private GPG* key, the attacker can then usurp your identity (e.g., sign emails) and decrypt encrypted messages that were addressed to you.

Hi! Nitrokey also contains an OpenPGP card which is a secure key store for your GPG keys. Even if your computer is compromised, your keys can't be stolen.

Actually i was going to say for on the go and it is an open source hardware encrypted free software flash drive.

hardware encryption > software encrypted

especially if free software

alimiracle: I see. That's beautiful. Are there other USB flash drives which firmware is free?

Yep its libre and to my knowledge there are none as great as nitrokey out there. At least not on the same level of security and to my knowledge, if there are any that are libre besides this, they are more than likely discontinued or extremely expensive.

That's at least my thoughts anyways. I may be wrong about that in the future... but for now i seriously doubt that. heh.

no its more than that, its also a fully free software compliant, hardware encrypted flash drive. you can have up to 3 encrypted mass volumes.

and yes what you said is true for the first 4 types but the nitrokey storage also is for storing files as well. among other things, it even has plausible deniability. look on the website for more info though. (HINT: nitrokey storage is in a crowdfunding based campaign on indiegogo. lets make them succeed. ;)

Yes the storage part is unique. I just wanted (for those who don´t want the storage) to promote the fsfe.
