Is there a digital audio player that is sold with free software such as Rockbox or one which enables installing Rockbox without voiding the warranty? I currently use a Rockboxed iPod Video (fifth generation iPod) which mostly runs free software (the original firmware is used for charging purposes), but I would prefer something which is more standard (i.e. includes a mini or micro USB connection, supports removable storage such as microSD, includes a radio, has a built-in speaker, can be charged via the computer and used at the same time etc). Thanks for your help.

I don't know of a digital player that does not lost its warranty if you install another firmware, but maybe you have to look for a player that is unbrickable. You can always go back to the original firmware and tell the store "I don't know what happened!"

I can tell you of my own magnificient player in which rockbox can be installed that meet all your requirements. Plus it is affordable, superb sound quality and editor's choice in anythingbutipod.com, the Sandisk Sansa Clip+.

* 8gb internal memory
* ogg vorbis, flac and mp3 support
* microsdhc slot, up to 16gb cards I think
* radio
* I'm sorry, no built-in speaker
* oled screen
* microsd standard

For less the price of an ipod you can buy this player, a pair of great headphones (mine are the soundmagic pl50, extraordinary combo!) and maybe (I believe Fiio is a great brand).

This player can be rockboxed, but I did not tested already.

If search for info on this one in anythingbutipod.com, you will see its the best value for the money. I can assure it's true, superb listening experience (but only if you replace the stock earphones with something much better).

Thanks. I would prefer a player with a bigger screen also (hopefully I don't sound greedy).

Not sure it completely related, but i think i read somewhere that
Clementine (the music player kind of Amarok) can be used now on iPods, i
must say that i use Rockbox and i like it very much. But maybe you wanna
look about Clementine.

What about a Android device, its not all free software but most sources are open. It also supports sdcards and radio. If you live in America forget that, your android phones are too dongled^^

Can you be more specific? Are you referring to a digital audio player running Android? If so can you recommend one? Also, which software is used to playback audio on Android? I alreay have a mobile phgone running free software (Openmoko) however the audio software that I use is too basic in my opinion.

Look at old unbranded phones like the HTC desire, the Nexus One, HTC wildfire or Galaxy 3 i5800. You get a phone (mobile data can be turned off) and a mediaplayer in one^^. Android comes with a very basical Music player that supports Playlists but in android is everything a app. So you can download an other Music player. (i use poweramp because i found no oss alternative so far)

Thanks but I don't want a phone. A dedicated player is better as it has buttons that are optimized for music (such as iPod's wheel).
