Original Emacs was created by Guy L. Steele Jr. [1] and not James Gosling.
Richard Stallman used Gosling's code which was released under free software license.
James Gosling changed license of later versions of his Emacs to be proprietary. Gosling's Emacs then became a complete failure and was discontinued.
