Trisquel 6.0.1 (with recent updates) just hanged on me big time!

I was alt+tabbing when suddenly my screen froze. I can't even switch terminals. I know this is possible but I'm dissapointed and was not expecting that. I was forced to reboot it with press-holding the power button. This also is not the first time it's happened to me.
Happens. To rule out corrupted memory you can boot off a Trisquel live CD/DVD/USB and run the mem checker all night long.
And when it happens again, it's best to try REISUB before resorting to the power switch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq
It happens to the best of machines and practically all operating systems, some times things just go wrong and your computer starts day dreaming. If it becomes a chronic problem then there is a major issue.
Thanks!
I used to have this problem, and I think it had to do with the intel graphics driver. I think installing the trusty lts enablement stack fixed it, and i have not had this problem with Trisquel 7.
Where is that trusty lts enablement stack?
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty
What stuff does it do to decrease the chances of it happening it again?
Already installing it but I still want to know how it will solve my problem. Thanks!
That would depend on your hardware, but I know that my laptop needs a newer kernel than 3.2 or else it randomly locks up, for example. Installing a newer kernel is just something to try.
Dude how do I get back to the previous kernel? Ever since I installed that things got pretty crappy. It might be the culprit. I've already updated and upgrade my system from both GUI and terminal ways. One of the crappiest things that happened is that I try to open up Mixxx and Cheese via ctrl + F2 and they do not open. Thanks!
First try running those from the terminal to see if you get an error message.
(You could hold the shift key during reboot to get into the GRUB menu where you can choose which kernel to boot.
And if you really want you can uninstall the new kernel if it's indeed to blame.)
Seems like the kernel indeed is the culprit. See the terminal reports.

How do I uninstall the kernel?
Probably the nicest way is to use the Synaptic package manager. Search for linux-image among the installed packages.
Done, thanks! Also I've been getting this lately, and not just lately, even a long time ago. https://mediacru.sh/Kg38ScHnX6SB
Does that happen to you guys too? What's up with it?
How do I know which kernel I'm using at the moment? What terminal command or way is it?
I haven't removed or done anything with kernels yet since you told me about using Synaptic, just so I don't mess up my system. I'm waiting for your advise, as well as others' too.
uname -r
Thanks!
So I had it for complete removal. Would that take me to my previous kernel?
I believe it defaults to the newest kernel installed, so probably yes.
I can't boot normally like I can before I installed the newer kernel. I'll just back up my files and reinstall Trisquel. Then update and upgrade it afterwards :) Thanks man! You're a great help.
Crap I really need to have my kernel fixed! Seems like my system would be acting like Windows soon, hanging and shit.
Maybe grabbing a new kernel from http://jxself.org/linux-libre/ will help.
Thanks, but I'm good with reinstalling Trisquel. I've already backed up my files.
