The Volkswagen scandal is everywhere in mainstream media, rarely mentioning the root of the problem, software that we can't study or modify having such power in our lives. The best option nowadays is to buy an old car without any kind of software.
Here's something funny that says a lot about these environmental agencies:

(Yeah, it's the users that cheat on emissions...)

That is the best option because they do not have built in limitations to limit your freedom. Maybe physical limits but they can be overcome.
If you see the trend in todays society it's going for limitations of freedom in almost every area. With this built in limitations by manufacturer that stops what you can do with the car you own. If you look at the documentary Gas Hole, would these people be able to experiment with their cars like that if they where running with proprietary software?

It's a temporary option at best, because one day, there won't be those old cars to buy anymore (they would be too old to work).
i wonder if someone has ever been able to run there own software on a car before?
you could make sound effects when your driving!
and play burger space with the steering wheel and horn!
and supertux kart with the car!! (while the engine is off!!)
you could even hire a gnu as your chofer and call it Freeman! x_X
