I'm looking at the podupti.me list and there is a lot to choose from. I care about privacy, but don't know much about privacy law. Especially in European countries.

I'm currently with Diasp.eu - haven't had any problems with them.

I'm also looking at installing Friendica but it can be quite complicated.

Are all the diaspora sites connected? I tried using something other
than joindiaspora.com, and found I could not othenticate.

Yeah, they're all connected.

Of course, if you want the best assurance of privacy, you can run your own pod on your own server. This is of course assuming you have a server to run Diaspora on.

Personally, I use ilikefreedom.org, which is in Germany. diasp.eu is also in Germany. I don't really know what Germany's privacy laws are like.

German privacy laws are very likely just an illusion. After the NSA scandal has been talked over in the German news and there were several talks between the German Secretary of State and (if I'm not mistaken) Obama, the newest bit of info is, that Germany was using a version of NSAs spying software on their own.

At first the fact that NSA was spying on the citizens of Germany caused surprise and made a lot of officials angry (how can they do something like that, our countries are friends, this is not how friends treat each other, this is an unacceptable invasion of privacy), now it comes out they were spying themselves.

At this point I don't believe anything the German politicians say anymore. My opinion is, they spy on us as much as they can, all the time, since long. At the very least since 09/11.

We do have very neat looking privacy laws though, but they are just a waste of paper.

Privacy laws everywhere are an illusion - the Americans proved that with Prism. Even if your own government aren't spying on you (which they likely are), the NSA are doing it for them.

I've actually had privacy laws used against me more often than I've been able to use them positively (which is never). ("Sorry sir, we can't release your medical records to your lawyer due to privacy laws").

The only solution is to implement privacy ourselves. Successive governments all over the world have shown that they have no interest in helping us, and even if one did it would be useless due to the NSA dragnet.

Setup your own email server.

Setup your own social pod (Diaspora, Friendica, etc.)

Setup your own XMPP server.

Use GPG.

Use Bitcoin.

If you have a blog or website, host it yourself if you can handle the traffic.

Decentralization is the only defence we have against these things. They can still hack us of course, but we've been making it far too easy for them by just putting all our data out there in the "cloud". Facebook, Google, iCloud, Dropbox, they can't be trusted. That's why the Freedombox initiative is so important, and deserves our full support. The main reason people don't have these servers set up at home already is that it's a pain in the ass to do, and non-nerds don't really stand a chance. Freedombox is how we're gonna make it happen. Not just for us in the Free Software community, who are probably capable of setting all of this up already, but for Joe Average who doesn't even know what Prism is.

As a community this is the single most important thing we will do with our various skills.

More often than not it's an excuse, but I guess it really depends on the
laws of your country. The Australian Privacy Foundation calls that BOTPA
("Blame It On The Privacy Act"). Their page:

The "best" Diaspora site is your own. Really. Help avoid the problem of having "super nodes" in the Diaspora network by starting and running your own. "Super nodes" (i.e. nodes with lots of people on them) start to look a lot like those services people should be working to escape from, if you think about it. So what if it's decentralized if everyone's using only a handful of nodes?

Agreed. And if Diaspora is too much of a pain to set up, install Friendica. It can communicate fully with the Diaspora network, and it runs on a standard LAMP stack. Works great for me on Debian.

Definitely, setting up your own pod is best, just like hosting your own e-mail is best. I don't think having "super nodes" can be helped, though, at least now; the same thing happened with e-mail.

Of course, everyone that can should have their own Diaspora site, or use a Diaspora site set up by a friend. For everyone else, though, the best thing is for there to be as many separate "super nodes" as possible to minimize the problem.

I worked for a little, community isp that had its own email, web,
usenet, and irc servers; we couldn't compete on price, once cable
broadband came in. Oh, for the days of the less-centralized internet;
LOL.

Is it possible to have your own server at home running a website/blog/etc anonymously? I mean, here's this website that nobody knows who's the author.

You can host a website on your server anonymously if it's available as a
Tor hidden service or Freenet freesite only (or on any similar network).
Otherwise the reader would know your IP address and your domain, these
rarely are anonymous. (Much more work is needed for anonymity, e.g. the
writing style can be used to guess authorship.)

(This is why I'm pessimistic about decentralized dating sites.)

Could you please explain in more detail how does that happen (the 3g thing). Maybe provide some links. I would like to know more about that.
Unless you are refering to TEMPEST attacks, which are dangerous but don't work the way you mentioned. Are you talking about TEMPEST attacks?
