Problem:
There is a problem on the default kernel of Trisquel that doesn't allow (at least myself) to lower the volume without using alsamixer.
It only lows the "Master Front" and not the "PCM", and because of that, using the button to make the volume down of even using the keyboard makes no change at all from 100% to 1%, but when it reaches the 0% there is no sound since everything is at 0%.
Solution: Update to a newer kernel. I've installed the 3.5.4 libre kernel and the problem was gone.
Just need to wait until Kernel 3.5.4 hits repos.
I was not able to post my comment (possibly due to xml.) The attachment shows a way to solve the issue with the keyboard bindings to the volume controls.
