In Trisquel 6.0 when a VPN connection is established, the connection icon does not change from normal to VPN. Thus the user does not know whether or not the VPN is active by looking at the connection icon in the panel.
In Trisquel 5.5 there are nice icons for wired and wireless VPN connections with a yellow/golden lock indicating the VPN connection.

(i cant say for the Trisquel 6.0 VPN wireless icon, since my 6.0 machine does not have wifi)
this is probably an upstream bug and might be related to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-icon-theme/+bug/772709
there are some suggestions how to fix it, but i didn't try yet
