Hi, I have been trying to figure out a way to record my microphone and the voices of people I am speaking with on a discord chat at the same time. I have looked into OBS, but this application does not run on my computer because of old hardware. Does anyone know how to setup Audacity or Ardour4 to accomplish this? I also have installed qjackctl to try to figure it out.

Thanks!

Discord is non-free software...

I understand that, but for my work, I have to use it. Do you know any way to use Audacity or other programs to record the audio?

"Have to" is a relative phrase.

At the very least, I ensure that my work does not require myself to
provide electronic devices for use on the job, and that all
interactions between work and home require no computers.

Pro tip: Do not use direct deposit for your paycheck.  It will put you
in situations where you will have to run proprietary JavaScript code on
a computer outside work.  Get your physical check and deposit it into
your bank as soon as possible.

For communication, I use my plain old telephone line to call work, and
I use my email to write on some occasions.  They seem to comply with my
requests for PDF over DOCX.  Otherwise, I wouldn't have gone further
with my employment.

Yes.  I use Audacity to record any audio output on my computer.  This
has no bearing on which program you are recording.  In the future, I
suggest you make your question more general.  We do not provide support
or documentation for the proprietary Discord program.

Audacity's wiki has a good guide to recording the audio output on your
system.

As for Discord: You're on your own.

I can't help you with Discord, but I can help with your more general
question about recording the audio output of a program. The best
approach I am aware of is to use JACK. Since you've installed qjackctl I
assume you know what that is. However, Cadence is a much easier tool
than qjackctl to configure JACK.

To configure JACK, follow the instructions I gave here:

Once you've done that, use Catia to route the program you want to record
into Ardour. Some programs are not JACK compatible. Firefox and
derivatives like Abrowser require Pulseaudio. For such programs, the
audio output will come from Pulseaudio Source, and this is what should
be routed to Ardour.

search something like "record system sound output"
maybe ya can record just sound from a app.
have a look at your input contorols in command line app alsamixer for
cules.
other cli apps to search for examples:
amixer
sox
arecord

i prefer sox for audio recording cus if there is a crash you dont lose
your rec. wheres audacity stores the rec somewhere tempory... i forget
if saving project first in audacity protects you.
Another benfet of sox is you can compress audio ready for sharing at
the same time as recording. like directly into flac.
