Xiphos won't install and question about IceCat

Hi guys, I started using Linux back in 2015 after reading how Windows was going downhill in various forums. I've messed around with a number of distros and am now giving Trisquel a try after reading about the free software movement. So far I've installed everything I've wanted to, however when I try to install Xiphos, I get a "broken package error". I tried Bibletime but it won't even select in the software center. I tried synapic package manager and this is the error I get:

Depends: xiphos-data but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libbiblesync1.1 (>1.1.2-0) but it is not installable
Depends: libgsf-1-114 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libsword11v5 but it is not going to be installed

Any idea on how to fix that?

Also I've been messing around with Abrowser and everything is good so far, I've even installed Pale Moon to test and it functions fine. However I see Gnu Icecat in synaptic and installed it.
Just thought I'd ask what is the difference between Icecat and Abrowser?

Welcome!

See if any of the information in this thread[1] helps.

One difference is that Abrowser is always based on the latest version of Firefox (currently FF 61), while Icecat is based on Firefox ESR (currently FF 52, soon to transition to FF 60, see here[2] for more info on FF ESR). Icecat also comes with LibreJS installed. LibreJS is an addon that by default blocks all JavaScript that is not detected as free software unless you specifically choose to allow it.

Palemoon is not free software, by the way. I recommend sticking with a freedom-respecting browser like Abrowser or Icecat.

Agreed.  Abrowser is all you need!

No, Palemoon from source code is free software, from binary forms provided by Moonchild Productions is not free software --> http://www.palemoon.org/redist.shtml

PD: Also you need to change name and logo if you don't want to ask permission. For example New Moon from ROSA Linux.

Sounds like too much work for a non-standard browser with a dearth of
support options.

Since you have to change the name in order to distribute it as free software, whatever the OP installed, if it was called "Palemoon," was probably non-free. You're right that one could install a free fork like New Moon or build it themselves and change the name/logo.

Ok, I went to this page: https://packages.debian.org/stretch/amd64/libbiblesync1.1/download
After downloading and installing the file Xiphos installs and works just fine-thanks! :)

I have another question about Icecat, I tried using it and saved several bookmarks-then I closed the browser and ran bleachbit like I always do. Later on when I opened Icecat-the bookmarks were gone! How do I prevent that in the future?

It looks like running bleachbit with "URL history" selected in the "Icecat" section deletes "~/.mozilla/icecat/xxxxxxxx.default/places.sqlite" which is the file containing your bookmarks. To avoid this, deselect "URL history" before running.

That did it! Thanks!
