I just wanted to let people know that we now have *a really well* written up explanation of all the details to point people to for a fuller detailed understanding of the nuances on what is going on with the FCC. It's basically saying exactly what I've been saying. This time with sources cited and all that. It lacks a little detail in a few areas like nothing on Canada/Europe yet- but it distinguishes between the rules that have already passed and the proposed rules and why we need to be concerned and how we're already seeing manufacturers locking down devices.

Don't forget- if you haven't sent in your comments to the FCC please do: www.savewifi.org has directions and tid-bits to help you along the way.

Nice job, Chris.

This article alone is sufficient for a layman like me to understand why FCC's proposed rule on modular transmitters and electronic labels for wireless devices are absurd from freedom point of view.

Wish you all the success in your efforts in this regard....!!

Hi Tomlukeywood,
Hope you can back your arguments on FCC's proposed rule with this article.

We can't let this happen.

I've been trying to convince my friends to also write comments to them.

I can not believe this "thing" is happening.

Josh Gay @ the FSF and a 4-5 others from the Save Wifi coalition participated in a phone conference with the FCC the other day (I unfortunately missed it- chalk that up to overwork in part due to the radio shows and the like I've been doing non-stop for two weeks, new employee training, conferences stuff (we're sponsoring the FSF 30th party @ the Ohio [GNU]Linux Fest), and other stuff). In it we got confirmation that the FCC *really does* want examples of how we will be harmed/negatively impacted by the proposed rules. So if nobody speaks up it's a lot harder to blame them for taking away our freedoms. They've got a particular goal which in and of itself is not an issue (to minimize interference). It's the way those rules will be interpreted and enforced by manufacturers that will be the problem. If the chips were designed different then manufacturers wouldn't even have to deal with this issue. Given that they're designed the way they are though it falls upon the manufacturers to solve the problem. In reality they can't do it any other way simply other than locking down everything. The companies designing the chips would need to redesign them for it to work for us and they're not going to do that because new designs cost money and manufacturers can take the short cut to compliance and just lock everything down. I doubt anybody of significance is even requesting a redesign. Even if they are it'll be years before we see chips that are designed differently.

I have to say it felt a bit intimidating to leave a comment to FCC, especially since it could not be done anonymously, but I think it was necessary. Just wanted to say thank you to Chris and others in the community for all the hard work you have done with this matter. Keep up the good work guys!

I believe this is the intended link https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2015/09/01/2015-21634/extension-of-time-for-comments-on-equipment-authorization

I guess now would be a good time to give them some more reading.

The extension has been known and stated on www.savewifi.org for some time. The extension is until October 9, 2015, and a 'reply' comment period is also extended until November 9, 2015.
