how to get pixel-perfect image in low resolutions?

how to get xrandr (or maybe some other tool?) to use "nearest neighbour" approximation algorithm (or otherwise disable blurring) when (for example) 3840x2160 ("4K") screen is switched to 1920x1080 resolution?

this reddit thread seems to describe a patch that allows to achieve it:

but this patch seems to be abandoned...

This issue is the main reason why I do not ever want to have or use 4k or higher screens. I like my pixels crisp and sharp. I am even considering buying a CRT monitor again. Love pixel 4 ever... <3

CRT's now have very little lifespan remaining, besides they are not an option for a laptop
regarding resolution even "fullHD" feels too much for me (pixel is too small even on 17" laptop)
1280x720 seems like a good compromise for a laptop, also it is exactly half of 2560x1440 and exactly 1/3 of 4K so the only remaining drawback of hi-res screen would be increased battery drain which I can live with
