The iso images are here:
http://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel_3.5RC_amd64.iso
http://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel_3.5RC_i686.iso

The checksums are:
2f874e12b73b5ac155611e4da71cf41a trisquel_3.5RC_amd64.iso
27c80cd20518c45833457737e3533608 trisquel_3.5RC_i686.iso

This images will become the final release if no serious bugs are found.
The list of changes from the beta images include:

- All known bugs fixed
- New artwork included
- Scim moved to iBus
- Dependencies cleaned, we freed the required 10MB

Please report any bug you find, but the package selection is now closed.
We will probably apply a larger set of replacements for the next
release based on the ideas we have been discussing, but most of them
can't be properly applied yet.

This RC release will be fully supported: if any change is done to it
before it becomes the final release, it will be applied via the
automated updating system so you will not need to reinstall it.

The beta is now discarded. Due to some versioning errors, updating from
it to the RC or final version is not supported and not recommended.

I've started a wiki entry with the Trisquel 3.5 "Awen" release notes at

I'll be burning and testing it.

Will the updater automatically install the released version over dwyn?

The link to the awen Wiki entry is broken, BTW.

Everything appears to be in good working order. :)

As usual, I have some elegance concerns:

That simple pulsating logo will surely result in faster booting, but I hope we can polish it to make it more attractive. The look of a single small, grainy triskelion weakly pulsating against dull black doesn't hold a candle to stuff like this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot

I had a feeling the USB Startup Disk icon I submitted wouldn't be used... What gives?

I like the logo very much but I think the curves are not very smooth. Is
this part of the original design?

It uses the same logo that the project has had all along. But it doesn't look very good in my opinion: almost anything is better than just a tiny logo faintly pulsating, especially when it looks so pixelated.

Our logo is an homage to Debian's own, so I tried to keep some of the
roughness in the original swirl.

I just replaced the upstream images with a Trisquel, we can come up
with something better for the next release.

I didn't see that post. We just kept the same icon we had in 3.0

Tell me what you know about the new boot splashes, and how you would like the next one to look, and I could get to work on one soon.

Thanks Ruben.

Will the final version make it for FLISoL on april 24?

Everythings great so far, would it be possible to make Trisquel Live CD work with UNetbootin or Fusbi? Should save on CDs and make installation easier and faster. Thanks

It should work with those already. Also, I keep poking Ali about
updating FUSBi, maybe you can join me :)

Hi Ruben, sorry to say, Trisquel doesn't work with either Fusbi or
Unetbootin, I've tried both, using Dwyn and Awen. I get the message "Boot
error" when I boot to USB. It's strange because Fusbi and Unetbootin both
work perfectly, using the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD, loaded from my computer. But
load Trisquel and I get the boot error message. I think I've already emailed
Ali about including support for Trisquel in Fusbi. I'll try again maybe ....

Puzzled. I just installed Trisquel Dwyn on my system yesterday, using a
USB stick with Unetbootin.

The final version should be this one, just renaming the isos. We will
wait one week for bug reports before publishing it.

I had no problems with burning this image: everything seems to be working perfectly...thanks!

One thing I have observed: after installation on hard disk you still find the option to install (again) under system/administration ("instalar RELEASE"). Should it not be removed?

PS.- Would it be fine to report possible problems on this thread?

Thanks for the replies. False bug then, must be just my system, or something
I'm doing. I have tried at least 6 times plus I'm using a standard
production line Dell, Maybe its to do with being root. I'll try again

This is fixed in the development release.

A couple of issues:

1) When dragging a file from desktop to home folder it does copy it instead of move it (i.e. it does not delete the original file from desktop).

EDIT: note that the above issue has happened only once. After deletion of the file in /home and repeating the operation it has worked fine.

2) Open Office: when selecting a portion of text to specify a different language, it does not accept the new language specification (keeps indicating spelling mistakes) until you close Open Office and open it again.

Another small bug, when I remove the "show desktop" button, and make my
panel black and transparent (as I like it) there is a small white dot
left on the panel that doesn't disappear and can't be removed. I had to
recreate the panel to get rid of it.

Weird. Please send this to the issue tracker, we will fix it after the
release, since it is minor and time consuming.

Mi suggestions:

It is useful to have CUPS configuration by default: "Show printers shared by
other systems" activated.
Statistical information on installation of packages should be sent (when
this option is ticked) to Trisquel and not to Ubuntu (on synaptic:
Configuration --> Repositories --> Statistics).

I add a new issue: after dragging a folder from 3.0 into the new /home a number of PDF documents display an icon corresponding to OpenOffice and not the picture of the first page of the document as other PDF's on the same folder correctly do. On the original 3.0 folder (from within 3.5) the pictures display correctly. The issue is not solved by closing and opening nautilus nor logging out. They are associated however to document viewer and open correctly.

One more (important) issue: the graphical interface for managing users seems to hang when you attempt to change your password and you type your previous password wrongly when requested. It stays idle for about five minutes apparently trying to check the password -so I guess it hanged-. I repeated the operation twice with the same result.

A similar issue is observed in a folder with .jpg files on a external drive. Among more than a hundred files, a few ones do not initially display a picture of their content but only a standard icon (a tree with a sunset as bakground). In this case, however, once you reload the window the icons display correctly.

That might not be a bug. Previews aren't displayed for image files larger than a certain size. I think the default it 3 MB. You can change it in Edit > Preferences > Preview in Nautilus (the file manager).

What you say is true. Some of the jpg files are very slightly over 3 MB but the thing is that after reload they showed the picture anyway and that issue has not reproduced when I have opened again the folder -all icons display the picture correctly-. As for the PDFs, they are all around 300 MB so I guess that the 3MB limit does not apply to this type of file. I think the issue with the PDFs might have been some sort of failure in the process of copying the folder to the new /home (they remain still with the icon corresponding to OpenOffice though are associated to document viewer and open properly).

This seems to be working fine now in all tested files -no changes nor updates to OpenOffice or language extension, so no idea about how or why it was corrected-.

We can't fix bugs that come from that back. If someone writes a fix we
can include it and send it upstream. I don't think those are even
Ubuntu bugs, most likely coming from GNOME and OOO.

The os does not work with my school's wi-fi but used to. The beta of 3.5 worked with my wireless for both home and school. The new RC works with wireless at home but not school. It either does not connect, or it connects and disconnects right away.

I do like the new os a lot, just want to let people know of this because it worked fine on the beta

Also, the usb disc creator seems have the ubuntu icon in the task manager still and need replacing I think.

Thank GNU.

That's interesting. Try connecting with wicd instead to make sure this is a gnome-network-manager issue, and not something external.

I've created a replacement, but quidam hasn't given it either approval or disapproval yet.

I tried wicd and it still does not work. Wicd acts as though it is connecting, and even measuring the various networks' strength in bars. But no web pages open when attempted. Not sure what changed from beta to rc that would cause this.

Thank GNU

I have found several issues, but that may just be because I went out of my way to look for them.

System > Preferences > Preferred Applications refers to the web browser as "Firefox".

System > Administration > Install RELEASE is still available. It probably shouldn't be.

System > Administration > Update Manager says "Welcome to Ubuntu" and "These software updates have been issued since Ubuntu was released." It should probably say Trisquel instead of Ubuntu.

System > Administration > USB Startup Disk Creator: Help does not work. Clicking on "help" generates the following error: The requested URI "ghelp:usb-creator" is invalid.

Internet > Web Browser: Help does not work. Clicking on Help > Help Contents opens the web page http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/firefox-help, which apparently does not exist.

Internet > Web Browser: When I open Web Browser, the first time I type something in a text entry field, the screen briefly flashes black and white. It's not a big problem, but it is distracting.

Internet > Web Browser: Occasionally, when I middle-click on a link to open it in a new tab, in addition to opening the link in a new tab, it will change my current tab to the site I was previously at.

Internet > Web Browser: Spell checking does not work correctly. Language is set to either Spanish / Guatemala, or Galician / Spain (I forget which), even though I selected English as the system language during installation.

Graphics > GIMP Image Editor: Help plugin is not installed. A web browser needs to be used to view help, instead.

Proper screen resolutions are not detected. I have been using GNU/Linux in various forms for about five years now, and none of the distributions I have used have ever gotten this right. I know how to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but most average users probably don't, and they shouldn't have to.

After going to System > Administration > Language Support > Install / Remove Languages, adding support for Japanese, then logging out and logging back in, I still cannot type in Japanese. The keyboard shortcuts for switching input methods do not work, and if I click on the iBus icon in the system tray, it says "No input window."

Attempting to install packages from the command line using aptitude causes many packages to be removed. This is what it says:

You have a pretty incredibly good eye for detail. I hope quidam has enough time before the release next week to nail every one of these issues.

I'm especially surprised that Web Browser still has some issues, since it's nothing but a simple re-branding of Firefox.

I had the same problem. Did you add Anthy in System » Preferences »
iBus? If you did, restart your machine, then click on iBus icon again
and select Anthy; after that you should be able to alternate input
method with CTRL+Space.

By the way, I still have a problem when I select iBus for input method:

I've also found that for me, using ibus for entering Chinese that the
language bar/panel appears in the lower left corner of the window that
I'm typing in, rather than appearing below the cursor where I am typing.
This is very annoying, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't behave this way in
Ubuntu.

Strangely enough, iBus seems to be working properly now. I haven't changed anything, either.

There's some file associations missing in the Web Browser and the spell check doesn't work.

* Missing file associations for Natilus Explorer for opening files in folder view and while Rhymthbox is correctly associated with mp3s, it doesn't seem to actually open and play them. For example, download a file right-click it in Downloads and choose open folder and a dialogue appears. PDFs are working fine.

* Web browser spell check is flagging correctly spell words as wrongly spelt (in English anyway), even with the English dictionary installed and enabled under Tools > Add ons > Languages. Right-click the flagged word and what looks like Spanish spellings are shown.

* Also some freezing of Web Browser when multiple tabs are open. Maybe related to Swfdec or memory use. I hadn't noticed this as much in Dwyn.

* Same issue is still there with Swfdec as in Dwyn, ie. flash heavy pages can freeze the entire application, so I have to close Web Browser process using System Monitor, this is time consuming and inconvenient. The same tabs re-open though .... including the Flash one that caused the crash! This can lead to a crash loop if I'm not quick with the mouse and close the offending tab immediately.

* Change in SuperMount? Different icons appear for USB flash drives now. Also USB drive is called "xGb filesystem". Looks like the drive device is detected but not mounted, but is actually mounted, can be doubled clicked. Screenshot posted. New screenshot gadget is great.

Has anyone also noticed an slightly long time to load web broser? The mouse pointer (the "wheel") takes longer to dissapear, I think, than under 3.0, though the system in general seems to run faster than 3.0.

Yes, I notice that too.

I've been using 3.5 for the past few days and so far no real problems or complaints. I checked the association issue with mp3 and Rhythmbox, and on the first double click it opens but does not play. If I completely quit Rhythmbox and double click on the same file, it then opens and plays. The same thing happens with .ogg files.

As far as mounting USB drives, as soon as I connect one, it appears on the desktop and Nautilus opens to the USB drive folder. I installed the humanity icons from the repo so mine I can't compare with what icons others see.

The option to install was also there after installation, so I removed the option from System > Preferences > Main menu just to avoid having someone else accidentally select it should they be using the machine.

When you install extra language support after the main installation, over 500mb of languages is installed that is never asked for. The bulk of it seems to be for OpenOffice. Firefox also has a lot of languages never asked for. As do gnome and gimp.

For me this happened when asking for danish language support. It seems that if you ask for language support for a language within EU, it also installs all other languages associated to the EU.

It should not do that, as it is using up disk and bandwidth unnecessary.

Also when installing package gdb-doc, I got the following warnings:

Processing triggers for install-info ...
Processing triggers for doc-base ...
Processing 3 added doc-base file(s)...
Registering documents with scrollkeeper...
Sætter gdb-doc (6.8.50.20090628-1) op...

Also when starting gdb, there is the following reference to Ubuntu:
GNU gdb (GDB) 7.0-ubuntu

When trying to configure HP 1005 Laserjet, system-config-printer offers installation of HP proprietary plugin as reported for 3.0 (http://trisquel.info/en/issues/configurador-de-impresoras-ofrece-instalacion-de-software-propietario-hplip).

HPLIP isn't proprietary software. It's under the GPL.

According to this page the recommended driver is foo2zjs, which is also free software.

Both are in our repos.

I realise now that I reported the problem wrongly for 3.0. HPLIP is under GPL but the problem is that system-config-printer (through HPLIP which seems to take charge of configuring the printer at some point) warns you that it is necessary to install a proprietary plugin for the printer to work -I thought when I reported the issue for 3.0 that it was HPLIP the plugin in question-. This is what HP states for this printer (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_1005_series.html)

Driver Plugin Information:

This printer REQUIRES a downloadable driver plug-in. Use hp-setup to install the printer, and to download and install the plug-in. In general, required driver plugins are required for printing support. Driver plug-ins are released under a proprietary (non-open) license and are not part of the HPLIP tarball release.

As for foo2zjs, I have only been able to configure this printer following the instructions of the developer(?) (http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/) -who states that packages in Ubuntu and other distributions do not work properly-. However, I think that following his instructions you also have to download HP proprietary plugin/firmware in the suggested step

Get extra files from the web, such as .ICM profiles for color correction, and firmware. Select the model number for your printer:.....
....
$ ./getweb 1005

since after doing it you get this message at the terminal:

(c) Copyright Hewlett-Packard 2002

which I understad means you have downloaded the same proprietary plugin offered by HPLIP in the first instance. So, should Trisquel -through GPLed HPLIP- offer the installation of this plugin/firmware?

EDIT: previous to installation of the plugin suggested by HPLIP a window displays a quite long copyright notice which you have to accept and which does not appear when installing through "./getweb" in the step suggested by foo2zjs developer (just the short copyright notice after installation quoted above), can we suppose that two different plugins are downloaded and installed? I still suspect they are the same, but...

"So, should Trisquel -through GPLed HPLIP- offer the installation of this plugin/firmware?"

Of course not. If HPLIP offers to install something nonfree, we should make a simple rebranding of this driver that doesn't recommend non-free software and put it in our repos, just like what was done with Firefox. I know it's a burden to maintain too many packages this way, but removing a driver that is required by a huge amount of printers to work would be awful for this distro.

I have gone through the list published by HP (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/combined.html) and the vast majority of printers supported by HPLIP (1956 devices on the whole) do not require proprietary plugins. Here is a list of printers that will require the proprietary plugins in order to work:

HP LaserJet 1000 Printer
HP LaserJet 1005 Printer
HP LaserJet m1005 Multifunction Printer
HP LaserJet p1005 Printer
HP LaserJet p1006 Printer

That's good news. Most HP printers function well with only free software.
