I'm using a Xerox Phaser laser printer, works perfectly under Trisquel. Anyone any suggestions for a separate scanner?

The "Epson Perfection 2400 Photo" works in Trisquel, at least basic scanning (I have not tested scanning negatives). Which model is exactly your Xerox? I am considering changing my HP printer. "Konika-Minolta PagePro 1400w" (laser) also works perfectly under Trisquel. Has anyone experience with Brother. Their drivers seems to be "open" (but not GPL apparently) and they are in Ubuntu Multiverse repos. This is the copyright notice of the Debian package in Ubuntu web page (I have been unable to find information about licensing or source in Brother's web): http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/multiverse/b/brother-cups-wrapper-extra/brother-cups-wrapper-extra_1.2.1-0ubuntu3/brother-cups-wrapper-extra.copyright

As for HP printers, a number of them are NOT supported by HPLIP from start (no plugin either, obviously). The above list only includes those which need a plugin to work.

Hi Flop, thanks for the suggestion I'll try Epson, just looking for basic scanning of documents, nothing fancy. I've heard Epson are good with GNU/Linux. My Xeror is a Phaser 6110N (the N meaning its networked - has Ethernet connection). Its a snap to setup because I just browse for a network printer, Trisquel picks it up, and automatically installs the drivers. I've never had a problem.

I am using a Brother MFC-7820N. I have not problems printing but haven't tried scanning yet. I added the printer through the System menu; selected Add Printer, entered the URL of the printer, next, next, etc and it was done. I didn't download any drivers, and I only have the repos included by Trisquel by default, so if GPL drivers are included with Trisquel I am using them. If not, I am not sure of the licensing.

You can download drivers for Brother products from http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html. I looked at a few of them; at least some of them are under GPLv2. (I didn't look at very many; there's a lot of them there.)

Anyhow, I have a Brother HL-5280 DW, and it works fine under Trisquel. Then again, it's not a scanner, so that probably doesn't help.

The whole HP Deskjet series, which includes my printer, works great in GNU/Linux.

Remember the days when GNU/Linux was great, except if you wanted to print anything! : )

I look forward to saying the same thing about wireless internet and 3D acceleration very soon. :)

Thanks everyone for the information concerning printers. I have to do some research on the models you are using. Very good news particularly about the Brother drivers being under GPL since I think there are good priced laser printers from this firm.

As for 3.5RC, I keep observing the problem concerning icons for PDFs. After downloading a file from the web the icon corresponds to an OpenOffice file. The problem is corrected if you rename the file, then it shows the first page of the file as it should be.

Report that one as an issue.

Gparted freezes apparently trying to recognise USB memory stick (which mounts and works properly). Once you close gparted it does not open again. A process called "dosfsck" seems to use 100% of CPU. The same situation has reproduced after reinit.
NOTE: Before opening gparted I had previously unmounted the partitions of the USB stick.

EDIT: same issue is observed in Ubuntu, except for the process "dosfsck" which is not shown there by System Monitor.

I add another issue: it happened at least twice that on closing the system a dialog window tells you that firefox (I think it uses that name) is already running. You have to kill it before you are allowed to close the system.

Does its license have the four freedoms?
