Hi, I repeat here a couple of questions posted previously in the Spanish forum.

1) I updated Trisquel 3.5 64 bits to Taranis but it seems that the kernel I am running is a "generic" one, which from its description seems to be both for X86 and X86_64. These are the two packages I found related to the kernel:

- linux-headers-2.6.32-24
- linux-headers-2.6.32-24-generic

(the description says: "Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x86/x86_64").

I see there are other packages which apparently seem more appropriate for a 64 bits system (package and description):

- linux-headers-2.6.32-24-server (Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x86_64)
- linux-headers-2.6.32-24-preempt (Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x86_64)

I am not clear if something went wrong with the update or if it is that I am actually using the correct kernel for Taranis 64 bits (I don't know which kernel I was running on 3.5).

2) Is there any log where I can check the messages sent by the system on shutting down. I have been checking different logs at /var/log/ but I can find any reference to actions specifically on shutting down.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

First question, as for if the "generic" kernel is the right one and the update was correct, seems to be answered: I have checked against an Ubuntu (64 bits) installation and the kernel is also "generic". I suppose it is the same kernel which is differently compiled for 32 and 64 -it rests to know what is the difference with the other ones which are only for X86_64-.

As for the second question, I made a typing mistake, I meant that I can "not" find any reference...

They are differently configured. For example, you want a server to be responsive under an heavy load even if that means being slower in average. You want the generic kernel. ;-)

Thanks for your answer, Magic Banana. Since 32 bits packages can also run on X86_64, I thought at first that "generic" meant it was the "common" to both architectures (i.e. the 32 bits one).

I forgot your second question. All logs are in /var/log. You can read them from the terminal with the less command (or tail -f to follow them live) but Gnome also has a graphical tool to do so (in the System/Administration menu). The one you are interested in is dmesg.

Thanks again, Magic Banana. I have been checking dmsg, but the thing is that all messages seems to me to be related to system initialization and not on shutting down. Is there any keyword or parameter I should look at in order to known what messages are specifically related to system shut down? I read in a post at Ubuntu forum that it was (something as) "killed". I have been searching for that and similar terms ("kill", "shut", etc.) on dmsg and other logs but cannot find any of those terms nor anything pointing clearly to system shutting down. Only thing I can imagine is that if there are no problems on shutting down nothing gets registered in dmsg but not quite sure I am right -in any case, correct system loading seems to be registered, so it seems weird to me that the same would not apply to system shut down-.
