I can not login to Trisquel 5.0 Live CD. The user "trisquel" is not selectable, so login fails. What to do?

Login? You shouldn't have to login at all. Take a look at the Trisquel 4.5 installation guide. This shows how to install 4.5 which is almost identical in procedure to 5.0. Could you point out at what step it asks you to login because that is not normal behavior.

Edit: What are you trying to login to do? To install it or to do some other task?

At boot I am choosing the first option "Try Trisquel without installing", it loads and stops with a login window (in the process of loading I see an authentication failure message).

Are you using the 32 bit version or the 64 bit version? Are you just wanting to do the liveCD for testing because that shouldn't happen. I would run the check disk utility from the main menu.

SirGrant, thanks! I downloaded and burned Trisquel again and now I can boot it without problems.

The 'root' user does not have a password and therefore you cannot login as that user. More importantly, are you trying to log in to Gnome with the 'root' user? Because you should not do that.

You have to log in with your own user account and if you want to execute a command as 'root' you can either run

sudo somecommand

from the command line. Or if you want to run a GUI application as root you can press ALT+F2 and enter:

gksudo somecommand

Please read about why Ubuntu (and derivatives) do not use the root user: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
