Hello I have a problem. Every time I reinstall the OS and do the updates, the resolution is stuck at 1400 x 1050. I tried to set it to something else using some xrandr commands, but it didn't work. Also the package xf86 is no longer present when I go to synaptic package manager. I don't know if that has to do with anything, but I should probably update the graphic driver or kernel. I tried updating the kernel using jxself's guide, when I try to install the appropriate kernel package it's stuck at 0% downloading it. Can somebody please help me?

You are one of the most unfortunate owners of an ATI GPU, which is an awful gpu for it requires nonfree firmware to work correctly. The libre kernel Jxself packages should at least give you the correct (native) resolution. Make sure you install and use (select in GRUB) the **latest** kernel (4.8) as on jxself's website.

https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

The real solution would be for you to sell your current laptop and buy one with an Intel gpu (just not the latest one, skyblob skylake). Without video acceleration those ATI gpus are useless crap :(

It looks like you got yourself what is know as a "dependency hell". If you don't know how to solve one I would really recommend backing up your data and reinstalling your OS.

Make sure you follow each step of jxself's guide for the libre kernel installation. If you have issues, once you reinstalled the OS, let us know.

Reinstalling looks overkill. I would first try to remove all packages from jxself's repository. The "Origin" button of the "Synaptic Package Manager", in the "System Settings", makes it easy.

Part of this seems my problem. I'm also in the process of a meta package transition [0] and it seems that I goofed on some, because linux-image-4.135-gnu is supposed to be linux-image-4.1.35-gnu. Note the missing period. But also, it's not even supposed to be 4.1.35 anymore, but 4.1.36. I've changed that and the updated versions are live now.

It would be great if PeaceGuy could try again, but with a small change: I don't know why you're trying to install linux-libre64-lts. This is one of the old meta packages and the current website makes no mention of them. Where are you finding instructions to install that package? Please stick to those called out at https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

Looking forward to seeing more...

Oh, and you should refresh the package manager first so as to be sure it's looking at the current data: sudo apt update.

Yes, I know it is overkill, but that seemed to be, upon a quick read I gave it, quite a serious hell.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Hence I wrote to "follow carefully" the instructions on your site.

OP, first try to fix, if you see you spent a lot of time without having managed to fix it, then maybe reinstalling is a good option. But, yeah, try first to fix the dependency issue. Use synaptic for convenience and ease.
cheers

Hello PeaceGuy. It would be great if you could please answer my earlier question: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/resolution-stuck-1400-x-1050-after-updates#comment-106931

In particular I am still stuck wondering why you are trying to install packages that start with the name linux-libre64...

These are the old meta packages and the current website makes no mention of them. Where are you finding instructions to install packages with that name? Please stick to those called out at https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ okay?

Hopefully you will reply with where you are seeing to do that.

I tried again a couple times but I still can't install it using this command sudo apt install linux-libre-4.1. The command is from the guide, I did everything again from begging to end according to the guide, but it's just stuck to 0%

Not advancing from 0% sounds like a network problem where it can't connect. The server that houses the repository is operational. Must be your network connection or something en route. Try a traceroute to see where things stop.

I don't really understand what I am supposed to do now with checking the connection. It's obviously alright since i can install any package except this kernel update. I proved that I can install any package. So the problem must be with this particular package. I don't know what it could be.

"I don't really understand what I am supposed to do now "

It's: traceroute linux-libre.fsfla.org

(It may be necessary to install the traceroute package first.)

Could it have anything to do with the "https" protocol (e.g. unrecognized CA)?

EDIT: Just checked plain http and it works. So I would suggest retrying with http instead.

I changed https to http and now it is downloading. I will see if it's good. I should enable the grub timer now so I can choose the kernel at the startup.

So I installed it succesfuly thanks to your help, but the resolution is still stuck at 1400x1050. Thanks to Abdullah Ramazanoglu's suggestion, I saw that the error was in https so I changed it to http. Thanks again!

The system now boots a little bit slower but that's about the only drawback of this update.
