WI-FI card has no free support

Hi

I want to migrate from Ubuntu to Trisquel. However, my laptop does not have a wi-fi card supported by free drivers (Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1000). Realistically, if I am going to use Trisquel, I will use a free but proprietary driver till I get a new laptop, and then I can check the hardware before I get it. In the meantime, I figure it is better to be almost completely free and start using Trisquel. To that end, does anyone know how I would find/install/use a driver for the wi-fi card.

Apologies if this offends people by going against the ethos of the OS too much. Also, preferably I would like to understand what is being done, so I could help someone else who has a similar issue but with a different card (I have no idea how much drivers vary and hence how difficult this would be).

Thanks

Chris

Nobody here will answer this question on how to manually install drivers (if at all possible). The solution to the problem is to buy a replacement wifi card. You can get USB if you are uncomfortable opening your laptop.

You need one the following chipsets if you go with USB: RTL8187B, RTL8187L, or AR9170. The last one is an wireless N chipset. The first two are probably preferable though. Sometimes N is a problem. N PCI and N PCIe Atheros chipsets are generally better though. The problem with N is there were many draft versions and flaky implementations. The latest drivers work better to get around some of the bad router implementations though.

If you get a card from http://libre.thinkpenguin.com/ Trisquel gets a donation of 25% of the profits and you are helping to improve the readily availability of free software compatible hardware.

Also maybe check this post here (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/cheap-wifi-card-works-great). Looks like someone is selling some cheap used USB wi-fi cards that should work. I would also advise against the non-free drivers/firmware. Since those handle communication there is no way to know what they are doing. They could be transmitting your information to the government or anyone else. While unlikely it is possible and you couldn't find out. Good luck!
