I've been wanting to give Trisquel a try for quite some time but my laptop isn't up to running the Gnome environment. Is there a release of Trisquel with a less resource intensive desktop like LXDE, Openbox, etc.?

Thanks.

Yes, there exists the Mini version (which I use) that comes with LXDE.
You can also use the minimal install and then install the desktop you
want.

Excellent! Thanks for the info. I searched the site before asking but wasn't able to find any info on it.

There are a lot of DEs in the repos you can install. Just install it and then choose it from the menu when you log in (it's a drop-down menu in the lower-left as you're typing your password). Some examples:

LXDE (Trisquel Mini): Install trisquel-mini and trisquel-mini-recommended

Xfce: Install xfce4 and xfce4-goodies

GNOME Shell: Install gnome-session and gnome-shell

KDE (Triskel): Install triskel and triskel-recommended

Unity: Install gnome-session and unity or unity-2d (unity-2d works without 3-D hardware acceleration)

If you're looking for lightweight, LXDE and Xfce are likely your best choices.

Note that the XFCE in the repos is antiquated and looks it. You have to go through some real work to get an up-to-date XFCE.

you can also add repository and choose Mate.

I'm definitely an Openbox and LXDE fan. I may give Trisquel a try. I've not used any distros from Ubuntu so I wasn't sure how their repo system was stacked with regards to extra desktop environments. I've been a Slackware user for the past 20 years and Debian for the past 12 or so.

Thanks for all the help!

Or Fluxbox, of course.

I like the panel in Fluxbox. Just what you need and easy for mouse users as well as keyboard jockeys.

Haven't used Fluxbox in a few years. I may have to give it another go.

While messing with Gnewsense, I was reminded of how much I like the old GNOME 2.3. When Orca can play in Mate, it's worth a look!

How is Mate on the resources, though? I have a laptop that struggles with Gnome and KDE. Well, it will run them, it's just not 'enjoyable'. I've always been a minimal desktop guy, myself, but I'm up for trying them if my laptop will handle them.
