Back to Trisquel 7, need some help

Hi all.

So I am going to give Trisquel another try.
I have some questions before I proceed:

1. I have Debian 7.8 installed with full disk encryption. Is there a way to format the entire partition and install Trisquel without losing the encryption already in place? It took almost 24 hours to get my disk fully encrypted last time, I don't want to go another round like that.
2. Trisquel 7 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 which is in turn based on Debian 8 (which is now the stable version). Since Ubuntu 14.04 is LTS I suppose they will provide backports from times to times. Are those integrated in Trisquel? Or will we have the same software versions in 2016, 2017...?
3. How fast are the security updates coming? I remember that I left Trisquel because of the slow security updates at the time. When I install the DVD, will there be a ton of updates that are necessary?
4. Is it ok to install from a USB instead of a real DVD? I was gonna use unetbootin to put the iso in my USB device and take it from there. Any problem with that?

I hope someone will take the time to answer these, as I feel these are important questions :)

Thanks everyone!

*sorry only know the answer to one of your questions
"Is it ok to install from a USB instead of a real DVD?"
yes its effectively exactly the same

Thanks for your reply tomlukeywood!
I have seen the work you have been doing for freedom, keep up the good work!

Except for the fact that (for me, at least) GRUB never installs correctly when
I install it off USB- either in Debian or Trisquel. It always seems to either
write to the USB itself, or to some non-device, even when I manually
specify /dev/sda. So I always install from USB, but I like to keep a live CD
handy to chroot and install GRUB manually.

1. I am not sure but I think that formatting (i.e., installing a new filesystem) necessary means losing the encryption in place on the older filesystem. Here is the Trisquel documentation pertaining to full-disk encryption: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/full-disk-encryption-install

2. Besides the Web browser (Abrowser) that is proposed in the latest version, you can enable the backport section of Trisquel's repository: http://packages.trisquel.info/belenos-backports/

3. Security updates usually reach Trisquel's repository a few hours or days after they reach Ubuntu's. There will indeed be a ton of updates to install after installing Trisquel from its ISO. You can choose the NetInstall though. You would then minimize the amount of (unsafe) software you download.

4. You can install from a USB drive: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb (I would simply use 'dd' from your Debian system)

Thanks for your detailed reply!

1. That's what I thought too. Sigh... I will have to lose some time then.
2. So, if I just use the Belenos repository I will get security updates, but no newer versions. For that I need the backports. But where do these backports come from? Ubuntu or Debian? And which branch? I honestly wouldn't like to have stuff from Debian unstable in my PC, but would be ok with the newer debian testing stuff. Maybe I am nitpicking, but I don't want to come here complaining that Trisquel crashes a lot on my machine :P
Btw, how do I add belenos backports?
3. When using netinstall what security is in place? HTTPS? GPG verification? NONE??
4. Thanks! Grown used to unetbootin :P

2. Almost all Trisquel packages come from Ubuntu's respective repositories (e.g., the packages backported to Trisquel 7 are packages backported to Ubuntu 14.04). When I write that they "come from Ubuntu", I mean they were copied and maybe patched to satisfy Trisquel's exigences in term of freedom. Trisquel hosts its own repositories. That includes the "backports". I do not think Trisquel proposes any package directly copied from Debian, especially not from Debian unstable. In my experience, Trisquel never crashes in normal use (I run my home-made programs that sometimes run out of memory, hence the kernel killing processes).

3. You can verify the integrity of the ISO with both 'md5sum' and GPG if that is what you mean. When fetching the packages (during a NetInstall or later, from the installed system), APT check their authentication and, by default, does not install unauthenticated packages.

4. I guess you can use UNetbootin too.

Thanks for the clarifications.
I will maybe try and compile freenetbootin once I get my Trisquel install done :)

In your experience (and other people's too) the Trisquel Belenos repository (without backports) is basicay equal to Debian 8, or does it have newer versions (for stuff like LibreOffice, KODI, GIMP, etc) ??
Is it really required to use the backports to get newer versions of these?

Like I wrote: the versions of the packages in Trisquel 7's repository almost always are those of Ubuntu 14.04.
