Can anime (manga, etc) be free? Are there any free anime (manga, etc)?

I like anime. But I cannot find free anime and I shouldn't illegally copy it or lose my freedom.
Can I license anime (manga, etc) and anime characters under free "software" license? Is Wikipe-tan really free? Are there any free anime (translated on Russian, Ukrainian or English)?
[I'm using GuixSD now, not Trisquel. But I think I will stay on this forum for some time]

"Manga" doesn't mean the same thing as "anime". In Japanese, 漫画 means "comic book". In English, "manga" means "Japanese comic book". "Anime", on the other hand, is a loan word from English and means "animated cartoon" ("animation"), whereas the recursive English-to-Japanese-to-English loan word means "Japanese animated cartoon" or just "cartoon in the style of something someone in Japan has made" depending on who you ask. Regardless, they're not the same thing.

So, depending on your definition of "anime" and "manga", it may or may not be possible for you to draw manga or animate anime, since you are not Japanese as far as I know. Maybe you could get around this by moving to Japan and becoming a citizen there.

If you do that, then yes, you will be able to put a libre license on your work.

My first anime was Yuri on Ice (yesterday) but I saw only opening and first minutes.
I know that manga isn't anime.
I'm not Japanese.
Why it is may be not possible to draw manga or animated anime if I'm not Japanese?

onpon4: can I distribute the password for reTux if I will receive it from someone [or crack it]? Is the password weak?

Because you're not Japanese. It wouldn't be a Japanese cartoon. It would be a Russian cartoon (IIRC).

> can I distribute the password for reTux if I will receive it from someone [or crack it]?

There's no law that would prevent you from doing that, but please don't. I would strongly prefer if you actually share copies of the game, i.e. upload it somewhere in an unencrypted form.

> Is the password weak?

No. You probably will not be able to crack it.

There was Ubunchu (IIRC, it might've been spelled a tad differently) a few years back.
It's CC-licensed. In my opinion, it's kind of terrible. It's about a computer club that tries different operating systems (with a pro-GNU/Linux spin).
Snooze...
The Morvena Project (https://morevnaproject.org/anime/) has also made some anime-style shorts that're CC-licensed.

I think it was episode 6.
I'm waiting for season 2.

If I'm right Ubunchu! is licensed under CC-BY-NC.
The Morevna Project seems good but world and characters are different than in other anime.
And, at least anime (Japanese animation) should be Japanese and Morevna Project's anime is Russian.

Which license is better for free anime (without 3D and text-to-speech)?

Next question: can fan made characters that looks like non-free characters (like characters from Pokémon, My Little Pony, Barbie, Monster High, etc.) be free or at least legal?
Can cosplays of non-free characters be free?

Those questions make little sense to me.

And can fan arts of non-free characters be free?
What about fanfiction?
