hi all

I cannot switch Between two keyboard layouts useing shortcuts keys
- I tried several different ones in: All Settings >
Keyboard Shortcuts. None switched the keyboard layout. I have also
tried setting a shortcut through the Tweak Tool > Typing > "Switching
to Another Layout" option. This didn't work either.
and I try Open System Settings and click Region & Language
Switch to the Layout tab.
Click the + button to add additional keyboard layouts
This didn't work either.

With GNOME Shell (at least), you can add new layouts with the "+" button you mentioned and then switch between the different layouts using Meta+Space (Meta is the Windows key on most keyboards).

It is a problem that is currently being addressed, it has something to do with Ibus and it should be repaired on the next release (7.01 I believe)

On the meanwhile, open up a terminal and copy and paste this:

$ dconf write /com/canonical/indicator/keyboard/visible true

Now you should be able to switch between keyboards with the icon placed on the indicator applet. This also helps the shortcut to work better for reasons I don't know.

Please, tell us if that worked.

Oh my... Can you at least switch with the icon? I know it's not the solution you want but until we find how to solve it you could use that.

In gnome shell, the shortcurt works flawlessly, btw.

Hi alimiracle,

I note you've reported the same problem on behalf of one of your friends before[1]. Can you explain a bit more about the use case(s) please. For example, is your friend also blind and you are both having secondary accessibility issues with the icon method a_slacker_here suggests? Or is it as with some uses for Japanese speakers you need to switch alphabets very frequently in a piece of text and an icon really slows matters down?

What I'm driving at here is 'What grounds are there for saying the 7.0.1 update, when it arrives, is not soon enough?'

If you try to add an applet using what is described in https://askubuntu.com/questions/66414/how-to-add-panel-applets-to-classic-gnome-panel (" you actually have to hold Meta + Alt + Right Click."), does it work?

If it does, is thee a keyboard layout applet you can choose?

no

Try gsettings set com.canoncal.indicator.keyboard visible true
Note: Actually this simply enabales one to change the layout from the panel rather than using a keyboard shortcut, but surely this should be good enough for you not to need a VM?

Edit: Never mind! a-slacker-here came up with that quite some time ago!

Maybe instead of running a VM or switching to another distro, you should try an easier solution - use Trisquel-mini? I'm running it and so far no problems switching between 3 keyboard layouts using a shortcut.

Of course, if you really want to switch to BSD (because of security or whatever advantages BSD has), that's another story.
