Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8

Hello, I recently installed Trisquel 8, and when I try to shut down my computer, it just restarts. I have this issue whether I shut down from the GUI or the terminal. The problem started out as intermittent but now happens every time I attempt a shutdown. I did not have this issue in Trisquel 7.

Reading around on-line, I tried various solutions. It was suggested that the wake on LAN feature in the BIOS could cause this issue, but disabling it did not solve the problem. I also read that a conflict with the Wi-Fi can cause it, but disabling Wi-Fi also made no difference. Finally, it was suggested that running the command "sudo update-grub" could help, and the first shutdown after I ran it did work, but then the problem returned.

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard and an Intel Core i3-2100 processor if that matters. If anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this issue, I would greatly appreciate hearing about them, or perhaps it is the result of a bug? Please let me know if you need any other information. Thank you

Can you shutdown properly using the Magic SysRq key method (if not please enable it and try to shutdown using this method)?

You will need to select a key combination similar to this: Alt+Ctrl+PrtSc+R+E+I+S+U+O

Thank you for your reply. Alt+PrtSc+o caused the system to immediately turn off. It didn't then reboot.

Since the shutdown worked correctly when using the kernel's shutdown command (it is preferable to run the full version I provided as it is a safer shutdown), I'm guessing the issues you have stem from bugs either in your desktop environment (MATE/KDE/Xfce etc), in your display manager (GDM/LightDM/XDM/SLiM etc) or in your init system (Systemd/OpenRC etc).

Do you think there's any way of correcting this issue aside from just waiting for a potential future update?

Was this problem immediately present when you installed Trisquel, or did it occur after making configuration changes? Did you update from T7 or do a fresh install of T8?

It started as soon as I installed it but didn't happen every time I shut down. Shortly after, however, it did start happening continuously. I did a fresh install of version 8. Thank you

With shutdown/restart/hibernation/suspend issues I find that trying a different kernel version can sometimes help.

I wasn't aware I had this option. Strangely enough, I just had 3-4 shutdown attempts in a row that were successful, but now I'm back to the reboots, so it's pretty odd.

I also encountered a shutdown problem where the kernel shutdown worked but shutdown failed when using the terminal or the menu. I contacted the Hyperbola developer via IRC and he fixed the issue (which was that the packaged version of SLiM at the time did not support OpenRC). I'm guessing you could open a bug report or contact the developer on IRC as well.

Thank you for all the information.
