Content sharing in schools

Hello!

The headmaster of a (fairly small) school I used to attend has recently been considering using the services of Google to share files (such as documents and presentations), usually made by teachers, with the students. Their idea was to use Google Drive and only share the files with students, but that would also require them to use or create a Google account, which really seems like a bad idea.

The system the school uses now is custom-made. The problem with it is that it is somewhat difficult to use and needs a specialist (the creator) to make some changes. So they apparently want something that has a simple interface and will allow them to manage things by themselves.

I would like to ask if anyone has experience with similar things in education, and if anyone has advice on what programs with simple interface one may employ to share files. Or, while at it, what programs can be used in schools in general. Would ownCloud make a good option here? Thank you in advance.

Hi there! I agree teaching kids dependence of such megacorps is a very bad idea. Perhaps instead one of these could come handy. We use Moodle at our uni but it's not very simple. The third link could possibly be used to help convince the administration. Glad to see somebody who cares about his old school and kids!

Please be careful with the first link. If possible, refer to the Free
Software Directory or to a repository of a free system distribution.

Here is what I found in the Free Software Directory so far (besides
Moodle of course):

* RosarioSIS (this one is new to the directory, and has built-in Moodle
integration): http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/RosarioSIS

* ILIAS: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Ilias

* Claroline: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Claroline

* TelEduc (developed at UNICAMP, a Brazilian university):
http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/TelEduc

* Manhali: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Manhali

* Manhattan Virtual Classroom:
http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Manhattan_Virtual_Classroom

* WhiteBoard: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/WhiteBoard

There are others in the directory, but they are
"crippleware" (free/libre with limited functionalities compared to the
editions with the same program name, from same proprietors (or people
endorsed by them) which has more functionalities and is considered
non-free unless proven otherwise). Besides, I'm currently waiting for
the opinions and voting of a proposal related to this issue with
"crippleware but free/libre".

The proposal is here:

Besides, I recommend you to check out Moodle once again.

As far as I can remember, it allows you to choose a license for each
content you share, and also allows you to "re-use"/"re-share" the same
content in the same Moodle instance in another forum topic, thus
avoiding the need to upload your content again.

However, unless I'm mistaken (and please don't take my words as valid
here, check it out yourself), Moodle seems to be account centered, that
means: unless the person has an account on the Moodle instance, he won't
be able to open the link.
