Beside the news that the Intel/Mesa stack now reached OpenGL 3.2 compliance, and the next Mesa version will bear a round 10.0 number, another exciting news was revealed.

All Trisquel games rejoy! The Dark Mod, a total conversion mod for Doom 3, finally reached a milestone, and became standalone, so from now on, the game can be played without the need to own a licensed copy of D3.

I hope this news satisfies those still waiting for some free id Tech 4 based game. Now we have another video game in possession, that is qualitatively comparable to some proprietary alternatives.

Thanks for the links.

(Although I try to concentrate myself on serious political activism, on my free time...) I also like some good gaming, once in a while. And, the "shoot-them-up" style of games, are the ones that I still find enjoyable to play. Although, the "team play" ones, are the ones that I truly consider to be good.

Your list is missing my favourite one, of all times...

The standalone mod of Wolfenstein, called "Enemy Territory", which licence was made free, a few years ago.

I am aware about Enemy Territory (I was nearly unable to find information about Return to Castle Wolfenstein because of it), and although it will not fit the list, it is highly possible I will add it later to this sub-page. There are other FPSs, which will possibly be added later (Cube 2: Sauerbraten, and AssaultCube), I just don't have time, and proper hardware to currently work on.

Correction:

"Enemy Territory" is not a good game to go along with Trisquel, since it's a game that recommends the non-free software (and spyware) "PunkBuster".

"Enemy Territory: Legacy" (http://www.etlegacy.com/) - which is an fork from (/evolution of) the original code of ET, and which claims to be faster than the original mod, while still being compatible with the original clients and servers - is a better option, since it doesn't work with "PunkBuster".

Actually this is so cool and comes in handy, despite being oriented more on a Thief-related fanboys/gals instead of hardcore D00m3rs. It was merely two weeks ago when I tried (out of curiosity) a native-built GNU/Linux GPLv3 licensed (with several e.g. library exceptions mentioned in README.txt) client [1] together with prop. D3BFG game assets.. but without luck under Xubuntu Saucy's 9.2.1 Mesa GL renderer. Got actually into menu with blank black screen and working SFX in the background, while getting debug warnings in console regards not supporting OpenGL 3.2 newer GLSL shading language yet and so on. So I gave up.

I've got the opposite experience, when tried RBDoom3BFG, and Dante on Trisquel. The compilation process of the BFG port went pretty smoothly, and the game worked just fine (except that the audio was a little choppy in menu), but this wasn't the case with Dante, which was a complete mess.

I will add some proper documentation for the compilation of these games, on Trisquel 6.0, as soon as I get my computer working again.

I wanted to try this game (standalone), but whenever I run the game, all I get is a black screen with the audio running fine. I saw this thread in the forums: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/15151-black-menu-caused-by-missing-fonts-and-gui-textures/ and it looks like the problem has something to do with GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc not being enabled. Any ideas?

S3TC is a patented texture compression technology, and for this reason, it cannot be included within Mesa by default (common problem with Intel graphic drivers).

Nevertheless, this can be easily fixed by installing libtxc-dxtn0 (not required if you are using the Intel Linux Graphics Installer, which is no longer supported on Ubuntu 12.04/Trisquel 6.0), and driconf (only needed to create the necessary ~/.drirc configuration file) packages, then enabling S3TC by following System Settings → 3D Acceleration → Image Quality → Enable S3TC texture compression even is software support is not available → Yes. The game should work then.

Black screen + audio on my laptop. (Intel graphics).
Black screen and no audio on the desktop. (Nvidia GT9500).

Is it that proprietary drivers are required?

It's completely free ("patent encumbered" does not mean "proprietary"). You should read the following Phoronix articles here, and here, to better understand the situation. There is also a Wikipedia article about S3TC, while S2TC seems to be the long-term solution to this problem.
