Is true digital freedom possible? I started with looking for open source hardware, to open-source firmware/software. But then even with some hardware with full open-source software, for networking I started looking at the Gemini protocol. But this again is dependent on Let's Encrypt for SSL/TLS encryption. Whom major financial contributors are Google and Meta. So not a lot of true freedom I guess. Does anyone know some alternatives to this? Or keeps themselves busy with the same things, and could put me in the right direction?
TLS has a trust problem, it trusts a server when it presents a certificate that has been signed by any CA in the list. The list is long and includes all kinds of untrustworthy organisations, some of which are under government control. Look up the list of trusted CAs in your browser and see for yourself.
Let's Encrypt is not the problem. It fixes a different problem. IMO neither of all of this has something to do with freedom, more with that people like convenience and convenience often creates new problems.

What is it that you want to achieve?
Well, whenever some major contributor is a company like Google or Meta I see a problem. Why do people want to use free software/firmware? Because of the freedom it provides, as in libre, free, power to the individual, I think. For me the next step was looking into other ways of using the internet, how much use is a free device if the internet is not free? I'm just looking into ways to digital freedom, and my last endpoint was the Gemini protocol. Which I hope is not the end.
