DVD stuck, constantly spinning and un-recognised by the file manager!

On my MacBook 2,1 I entered a DVD to measure how long the battery will let me play video.

For unknown reasons vlc would not play the dvd (neither the original or the ripped copy). Now the situation is even worse: I can not get the dvd out of the drive and it is spinning continuously. The file manager does not recognise that there is a disk in the dvd drive. However, if I run a lsblk it is recognised including it's size (4.4 Gb). Still, via the terminal /media/username/ is empty.

I have tried numerous ways including eject /dev/sr0, physically stopping the disk (with a credit card) and shaking the computer.

I have searched the net, but can't find information about how to manually remove the disk (which I fear is the last possible solution).

Any good advice on how to solve this problem?

Some models accept a straightened paper clip.

"A co-worker walked by and said "Sometimes the disk hits the rubber dust seal on the way out and won't eject."
He was right!
I ran my thumbnail along the seal to spread it outward and the disk ejected on the next try.
It's not always software, people!"

But overall: Experiment.

Thanks.

However, these models apparently do not come with a manual eject mechanism. It seems that Apple never thought that there hard- and software could fail. But then again, the issue did not occur under their chosen conditions.

Freedom is not the easiest way out - but nobody ever promised it would be.

Try reboot, after the chime press and hold the left mouse button. It should work even if you only have Trisquel on it.

Thanks.

There is no left vs right mouse button on a macbook but I'll give it a shot. I wonder if it will work since it is running libreboot!?

"However, these models apparently do not come with a manual eject mechanism."
My understanding is that only at least of them it was hidden inside the loading slot on the far left or right. Gotta check with the internet...

Also, do you see any movement at all? I remember a friend who once used tweezers to remove a CD from one of those slot-loading drives while the drive was in the process of trying to push it out.

So far I have had to remove the drive. I still haven't been able to get the disk out but I cant believe that will not happen at some point.

Once your hardware problem solved (hopefully), you may want to install the "libdvdcss2" package to have VLC break the DRM on most video DVDs. That package is not in Trisquel's repository to avoid legal troubles. Here are the instructions to get it: https://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html

Thanks for reminding me!

I had forgotten about this, which you (and others) actually taught me a long time ago.
