Great! Even more exposure for Trisquel Gnu/Linux!
New York, New York, USA -- Thursday, October 25th, 2012 -- Today
visitors to the primary Windows 8 launch event were greeted by an
unexpected and uninvited visitor -- a gnu. Activists, one dressed as the
free software movement's buffalo-like mascot, converged on Microsoft's
event to distribute pamphlets about the hidden dangers of Microsoft's
latest proprietary creation. The Halloween-themed action included
plastic pumpkin buckets full of DVDs loaded with Trisquel, a free
software distribution of the GNU/Linux operating system.

On the subject of Windows 8: a lot of people are complaining about the new user interface for Windows 8. It almost seems like a great distraction for the new anti-features that Windows 8 will be bringing in:
- Windows 8 will bring the proprietary Adobe Flash plugin by default. This will mean more users may be forced to rely on it.
- Windows 8 for ARM will be bringing in Restricted Boot, an anti-feature which prevents users from installing other operating systems.
- Windows RT won't be able to run anything not approved by Microsoft.
- Anyone who wants to install software on their Windows 8 ARM computer has to agree to a 3900+ word agreement, separate from the EULA.
- Windows 8 users will be forced to agree not to bring a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.
- Microsoft has admitted can remotely delete apps.
For some strange reason, The Right To Read story doesn't seem like such a distant future any more.
I hope more windows users will realize how dangerous w8 can be. FSF is surely helping. Great job FSF!
eheheh :)
Very nice.
Well done, FSF.
For all of you in doubt, this kind of actions do work... The way I got to know about GNU/Linux, years ago, was through two friends of mine who went to an anti-Bill Gates demonstration, here in Portugal, where someone offered them a CD with a GNU/Linux distribution.
I think your in the wrong place if you think there are people here in doubt (except for maybe t3g).
I don't use Windows and feel sorry for those that are forced to use 8. Trisquel has a nice classic interface that is close to what people are used to on Windows 7 and earlier. It is a good thing people are educated on alternatives and bravo to those that spent the time and effort to promote Linux during this event.

That is a NICE shot as it clearly shows the Trisquel GNU/Linux DVD
installers.

Nice photos! I wish I was there...
The app killswitch refers to apps that specifically come from the windows store. I'm not so worried about that (If you don't like it, don't buy from there). What I AM worried about is that Microsoft may be moving toward a system where "Non-certified" apps are no longer allowed to be run on the OS.
No, this has not happened yet, but I have noticed that in Xp, Windows used to flash a warning message about non-certified apps, and ask you if you wanted to run them anyway. NOW in windows 8, the OS will flatly refuse to run non-certified apps unless they are specifically unblocked through the properties context menu. How long until this is removed from properties and placed in the control panel? And from there, how long until running non-certified apps becomes an OEM-Only choice at install time?
For someone who is savy, using the unblock feature is trivial, but what about someone who knows nothing about pc usage?!
Trust me, I have family in the pc customization business (they also provide the accompanying tech support), it is worse than a geek like me can possibly contemplate. "Knowing nothing" literally means knowing nothing.
And don't even get me started on this metro bundle of !@#$.
I thought in Microsoft's Windows 8 the only place to get apps was the store. No?
I think that's only for the ARM version of Windows 8, called "Windows RT".
Chris,
VLC, Evince, Fireefox and SharpE desktop Environment all run on windows 8 (though SharpE with some problems). It is definitely possible to run 3rd party apps in wWindows 8 if you remember to unblock the non-certified ones first. I haven't tried RT though. Say, Windows 8 is a golden opportunity for businesses like ThinkPenguin. You should start running adds like this one:

You guys are doing the world a great service by providing GNU/Linux pre-installed with hardware!
I tend to agree with Mark Shuttleworth on this one. It is probably a better idea to advertise the advantages of GNU/Linux than to disparage the competition.
We're moving forward with marketing although are not doing the things you might think. At least not yet. We're working with various projects on marketing/business strategies. I guess you could say I'm the one working on the business strategies and implementing the details although the lead developers / project leadership need agree.
Spent about four hours this morning finishing up the details/implementations for one such project. Hint: it's the largest user facing project out there. That'll make the biggest impact and hopefully fix the resource problem. Both for free software projects and ThinkPenguin. If our relationship with Trisquel proved anything it was our strategy is working. It just needs to be scaled up a bit.
And done!
Now he just has to make an announcement.

Waiting in anticipation regarding what this project is.
