I liked it. I just read a Christmas gift from a nephew by T. Kingfisher, "Nettle and Bone". You writing reminds me of that book. I guess time will tell how Kai knows his stuff.

I was assuming that was just the first chapter of sprawling saga.
Maybe Kai will get some excavation machine going and they dig down to find a large sculpture of penguin dressed in a rain coat.
