GNOME (the latest stable, the one advertised in GNOME site) isn't working smoothly for me

Yes I think I got it worked out now! I did autoremove and autoclean, and it seems like redundant packages are the culprit! :D

It makes no sense: the software behind the "autoremoved" packages was not running and "autoclean" (or even "clean") only erases .deb files (nothing that is executed).

Did you check RAM availability when the system was sluggish? If it was full (maybe a program leaking memory), then the system was using the disk (which is 10-100 times slower) as a complement.

yep. that is exactly what I thought! did you reboot the system? Because autoremove and autoclean can't fix a DE but a reboot sometimes fixes some lagging - It happened to me the first time I installed Trisquel: lagging like a drunk horse, especially the terminal.. Then, one reboot later it was ok!
