Google Drive is setting back document format openness

Google Drive is out and is something I won't use. In general I do not use cloud based services for security reasons and I believe I lose control of what I own. Plus, you don't want sites like DropBox or Google Drive claiming ownership of your stuff.
So with Google Drive, I read that the synching of your documents to your hard drive isn't really a file at all but more of a link to their website. Taking this to task, I started a conversation on their groups at https://groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!category-topic/drive/submit-feedback/O-nEKjUa-LA basically requesting an open format like OpenDocument that is saved on their server and downloaded as such when synching. This is what I got basically:
"Unlike competing productivity suites (Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, ...), there is nothing available for editing Google's proprietary documents formats"
Pretty scary for the future of document storage ey? Somehow Microsoft is coming off as less evil as they recently added OpenDocument support to their online office application and it saves to your hard drive as an .odt if you created one to begin with.
This post seems like it isn't trolling, but I don't want to risk it. Can someome who read it tell me if it is worth reading?

Well what do you expect from a free; as in beer, service?
Just use Sparkle share and setup your own Dropbox-like service.
Not trolling.
I wonder what makes people accept these conditions. "Your documents are ours." That's so stupid...
That's because almost nobody reads said conditions ;). If the product is convenient, people use it and that's it. Sad but true!
.
Open standards in documents is one thing I don't make any comprimises on. If I am emailing something to someone that I know may have Office 2007 or above or LibreOffice, I stick with ODT. Otherwise I export as a PDF if I expect any problems with the person on the other side opening it or if use custom fonts in my documents.

Actually, for truly free, autonomous web services check out owncloud:
http://www.owncloud.org
Here is an implementation you can try for free (or pay):
http://www.owncube.com
If you signup use magicfab as "invited from" name - I'll get an extra
GB. Although I am using my own instance too, this will let me know who
signs up as a result.
