Handbrake alternative

Hey guys,
I'm noticing that Handbrake, an excellent DVD-ripping utility, is not considered free software due to its inclusion of a specific codec library. As such it is neither included in Trisquel nor in Fedora (or Freed-Ora since my installation uses the libre kernel). Is there a decent alternative that I can use? I should mention that I encode anything I rip into .mkv files using the VP3 codec and OGG audio.
Thanks in advance!
I use ffmpeg which supports free formats (Theora, VP8, Vorbis etc).
I wonder what make Handbrake "worse" compared to those players which incorporate identical codec libs, e.g. mplayer, vlc, etc.
As for your question: ffmpeg, ffmpeg2theora and mencoder can all be used to transcode to free codecs / containers.
Handbrake includes a proprietary AAC encoder. All the players include an AAC decoder which is free software but do not include the proprietary encoder.
Thanks for explanation. And what about ffmpeg if it is compiled with aac encoding support ?
ffmpeg is compiled without non-free AAC encoder.
By typing "ffmpeg" into terminal you can see what flags were enabled during compilation.
Here is ffmpeg on my Parabola computer (on Trisquel I think libx264 isn't available in ffmpeg due to software patents):

How does one rip a DVD with ffmpeg? I guess I really need to learn that utility since I had no idea it could even do so.
Define "rip".
Do you mean like transcoding / re-encoding from an un-encrypted file to another container ?
Or "ripping" in it's true meaning of decrypting things ?
To rip a DVD using ffmpeg you need to first copy the VOB file to your computer. Here you can find more details:
http://eng.anarchopedia.org/how_to_encode_video_to_OGG_Theora#ffmpeg
Arista or Transmageddon.
For conversion between formats, I use Sound Converter for audio (also to extract audio from video files), WinFF (which depends on FFMPEG, but acts as a user-friendly front-end for this one) for video.
I don't know if this is exactly what you mean, but regarding saving multimedia from a CD/DVD to the computer, I use VLC. Although I've never saved movies, just audio files, for temporary usage only.
Best regards, ADFENO.
Have a nice day.
@SilverSlimer:
Unfortunately you still didn't state what you consider "ripping" but anyway.
If ripping means for you transfering encrypted DVDs to HDD for further processing then you might want to check out this thread:

I posted my DVD backup script somewhere in the lower part of the thread:

It was to rip a first season DVD of Heroes that I use for my ESL students. Considering the DVD discs get used and abused over the course of the year, I wanted to make VP3/Vorbis files using Handbrake. I'll have to try Transmageddon or Arista since Handbrake is not available.
Once again:
You first need to "rip" the DVD for example via mplayer and then convert it to the format of your choice.
