Has anybody tried to use the Vega11 onboard GPU, that is in models of AMD CPUs such as the Ryzen 5 3400G, on Trisquel ? I haven't seen any entries in H-Node yet. I doubt they work based on my experience with previous AMD GPUs but was curious.

Older AMD GPUs are garbage in my experience, even for people who don't care about software freedom. You can't even get decent video playback without the non-free drivers, which often are only available for out-of-date kernel versions.

From what I hear, newer AMD GPUs do not have this particular problem, because there are free software drivers[1]. However, I have not tried one of the newer GPUs myself, and I don't know what firmware may be involved.

Even if newer AMD GPUs do work with free software, you may need a newer kernel version than Trisquel's default 4.4 kernel. You can get the latest version of Linux-libre from jxself's repo[2].

I have used the R9 270; RX 390; RX 480; RX 580; and RX 5700 XT under Linux and had no playback issues and the Mesa drivers have gotten a lot better the last few years. Far from garbage in my experience. They are garbage on GNU operating systems sure but you said even for those who use the non free drivers and I used Mesa albeit on distros such as Manjaro; Solus and Linux Mint. The non free drivers were garbage in my experience. Harder to install and ran many games worse.

I am using the 5.6.0-62 kernel on my Trisquel desktop right now buy could upgrade if needed. I guess I will just have to buy the CPU as a $75 test and sell it if it doesn't work with Trisquel.

In my experience all ATI/AMD graphics cards are garbage. It is true that they have free/libre drivers. It is also true that these free/libre drivers won't work without non-free firmware. Without non-free firmware, they often can't even recognize the resolution of the display.

My experience has been the same but I was wondering abouty a specific model.
