Help with making and recording music

I have started recording myself playing guitar. I am in Trisquel 10 and am using Audacity which I just started using a few days ago - man, what fun!
But currently, I am able to record through a microphone OR listen to what I have recorded via a headset. One or the other, I cannot do both at the same time.
1. I want to be able to add a track to what I have recorded by playing along with it but I think Alsa provides only 1 channel so that when I have the microphone on no sound can stream.
I was looking at this a little, maybe last year, and seem to remember there was some hope to fix this problem via JACK but I was unable to get it working. Anybody know how to resolve this problem?
2. I am thinking as a fall back to add another laptop to the process so I could at least record, save, transfer saved file to 2nd device and listen to the playback on that device with headphones while recording a 2nd track on the first device. But my best device for that right now is an old ASUS AspireOne netboook which currently is running Trisquel 6. It is i686. So I wonder what is the latest version of Trisquel that still had an i686 version?
I just realized that my netbook has MPV installed so as long as the headphones work with it I can use it as is. I cannot get updates or install anything else because apt-get returns a 'the certificate is NOT trusted' message. But I can still use it for this project as is.
Email me at my screen name at disroot dot org if you like. There is a special distro for recording audio and video that has a specially setup JACK/alsa/pulseaudio combo that I think would do what you need. It does have a current 32-bit version, based on Debian Bullseye. One of us would need to libre-tize it by removing any non-free firmware and software and putting a Linux-libre kernel on it. The distro is made by an online friend of mine and is in the top 50 in the Distrowatch rankings.
It would be a cool project, as this distro uses a real-time kernel for better audio recording, and jxself makes a Linux-libre real-time kernel. It would be fun to replace the one with jxself's and see what kind of performance you could get.
Anyway, best to discuss this by email, I don't want to violate forum rules by talking about non-free distros here. So my email's open if you want to follow up on this post with me offline.

I believe this to be Trisquel 9 Etiona, from the last sentence in "Architecture changes":
https://trisquel.info/en/trisquel-10-nabia-release-announcement
Not sure about the other points you raised, but there are probably people around using JACK in any sort of combo that makes play-while-recording possible on Trisquel. Note that I will cheer for any attempt at liberating any distro, and especially 32-bit distros, but usually need long-term support.
I am using trisquel 10 for audio recording. I recorded my synthesizer and e-violin with that setting. For better audio quality than my built-in soundcard offers I bought a Steinberg UR-RT2 audio interface with 2 mic/line IN which works here with trisquel. For recording I use jack (with qjackctl) and ardour (that version which comes with trisquel or the new Ardour 6.9) The recording with ardour is working fine here. Ardour offers "unlimited" tracks to record, also simulaneously.
Than you all very much for the help.
I have downloaded Etonia and will try to upgrade my netbook today. I was able to use it yesterday to playback after moving the mp3 via thumb drive and play along recording on my PC. Shift + L made the recording loop in MPV. A little awkward but very fun. Thanks for the information prospero.
andyprough: I sent you a toot. Would be a cool project indeed. Have never done anything like that but never too late to learn.
Re Ardour and an audio interface - I have Ardour5. I just started learning how to use Audacity so in a little while longer I'll turn my attention to Ardour. Today I will work with Hydrogen first so then I'll be able to play along with a good steady drumbeat.
The Steinberg unit looks like something I probably need also. I have an old Yamaha electric piano with MIDI that I will want to bring into the process too. Thanks knife for your recommendation. Probably a trip to Guitar City in the near future.
Cheers.
Speaking of Audacity, Wikipedia mentions two forks that unlike Audacity do not phone home:
- Tenacity
- a fork that removes update checking and error reporting code added to Audacity 3.0.3 (July 2021), adds some new features, and fixes long-standing Linux packaging issues with vendored dependencies
- Audacium
- a fork without update checking or error reporting, and with new features
But Trisquel 10's repo only has Audacity (and an unrelated package that happens to share Tenacity's name). If the forks are alive, could we hope to have one of them included in future repositories?
If the forks are alive, could we hope to have one of them included in future repositories? Seems like that would be good.
From Prospero's posted link
"Nabia will be the first release to not have support for 32-bit hardware on x86, while Trisquel 9.0.2 Etiona will continue to provide support for x86 32-bit machines until April 2023."
I installed Etonia on my netbook and cannot get updates, cannot install packages or even go to trisquel.info in Midori, which is the only browser that was installed. Midori says bad TLS certificate. Apt reports no package lists and archives are using expired certificates.
Hopefully these issues can be fixed on Trisquel's end?
I edited sources.list to AllowInsecure=yes and trusted=yes for each deb but no joy.
I got back a 32-bit netbook with etiona that I left to a family member a while ago (two years?) who never used it (she never used a computer and still don't feel like using one).
To do an update, I had to replace https with http in /etc/apt/sources.list, then it worked, and I replaced http back with https.
I suppose it should work if you do the same.
I am planning to re-install it with etiona in dual-boot with parabola.
EDIT: changed nabia to etiona
'I had to replace https with http in /etc/apt/sources.list'
Well I did not think of that. Pretty sharp!
It's too late for me, I decided on another distro for this purpose.
