Hello lovely people.

I’m facing a difficulty.

Short version:

Dulicity backups will not import old Icedove mail client.
How can I get my old mail from Duplicty backups?

More:

My former computer was using Duplicity for backups. At the time I was using IceDove mail client.

Computer dies. GNU/linux use is set aside because of other factors. Fast forward 8 months to present. I obtain an old laptop and attempt to restore those files.

The problem: IceDove is no longer supported, and when I tried to run Duplicity it comes to a point where it says Duplicity has failed, mail cannot be loaded, and basically saying “You will have to deal with it.”

I’ve tried to run Duplicity backups on various distro Mint Debian, Trisquel, and now Uruk. Even older version of some to see if they would still run Icedove, or unpack the Mail client onto current Thunderbird default client.

So for the questions:

I need those backup files, and old mail files.

Can I somehow access them in my Duplicity backup, and manually transfer them to my home directory in Uruk?

Are there other options.

I’m using Uruk and will stay with it for the present.

TY for any help.

'man duplicity' says:
It is possible to restore a duplicity archive "manually" by using tar and then cp, rdiff, and rm as necessary.
I have never done that.

Let me approach it from another angle: are there previous versions of Linux that still run IceDove, that I could install my files from Duplicity onto? And older version of Trisquel perhaps?

Trisquel has had Icedove by default since version 8 was released. Duplicity does not install anything. It recovers files. Icedove's data and configuration are recovered in ~/.icedove whether Icedove is installed or not.

Instead of 'install', I should have said "restore". The Restoration did not work.

Here are the alerts I received when trying to restore a Deja-Dup/Duplicity backup onto a fresh (and updated) install of Uruk:
